The Blood of Dawnwalker: How to Defeat Brencis in the Final Boss Fight

Both phases of the Brencis fight explained, from his summoned wraiths to the Grotesque Ascendant form in Anachora.

Both phases of the Brencis fight explained, from his summoned wraiths to the Grotesque Ascendant form in Anachora.

Brencis, the Knyaz of Vale Sangora, is the fight the entire campaign points toward, and he does not go down in a single stretch. The encounter splits into two distinct phases with completely different arenas, and the second one only starts once you have emptied his first health bar. Knowing what changes between them is most of the battle.

Quick answer: Clear his summoned wraiths first while parrying his shield-marked attacks and dodging his skull-marked ones, drain his health bar to trigger the teleport to Anachora, then defeat his second form, Brencis, Grotesque Ascendant, to end the fight.

How the Brencis fight starts

The standard route to the fight runs through the quest “A Deal with the Devil.” After you defeat Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe, your infamy maxes out, the Infamy Edicts cutscene plays the following day, and Brencis sends word that he wants to talk. That parley is where the confrontation begins.

The conversation decides who stands beside you. Picking the sword option, or the “Enough. Time to End this.” line, drops you straight into combat with no allies. If you have finished Lacra’s or Crake’s questlines, you can instead start the fight with their support, and both of those paths also offer a last-second option to betray them and take Brencis’ deal.

Note: the quest journal updates to “Defeat your father” once the fight is live, which is a clean confirmation that you are past the point of talking your way out.

Phase 1: Brencis, the Knyaz of Vale Sangora

Phase one is a crowd fight as much as a duel. Brencis repeatedly summons red wraiths that harass you from the flanks while he works the center, and his own health bar is deep enough that you will cycle through several waves of them before it empties. Trying to tunnel on Brencis while the wraiths pile up is the fastest way to get surrounded.

Read the attack indicators rather than the animations. A shield icon means the attack can be blocked or parried, and a clean parry buys you a counter window. A skull icon means the attack is unblockable, so you have to dodge or step out of its range entirely. Brencis’ unblockables include a blood projectile he throws when he is at distance and summoned blood weapons that slash at you in close quarters.

Charge, from the Swordmastery tree, is the standout tool here. At rank three it closes distance, hits hard, and stuns, which lets you reset a bad position or punch through a wraith that has cut you off from Brencis.

Witchcraft and Vampirism abilities slot in alongside Swordmastery, so there is no single mandatory build. What matters is having at least one gap-closer or crowd-clearing ability off cooldown whenever a fresh wave of wraiths appears.

The transition to Anachora

Emptying the first health bar does not end the encounter. Brencis uses blood magic to pull Coen out of the arena and into Anachora, the red, ruined vampiric afterlife, where he sheds his human form. He becomes a skeletal creature with long branch-like appendages, renamed on the health bar as Brencis, Grotesque Ascendant.

You start the second phase with a full health bar, so there is no need to hoard healing through the end of phase one. Spend it.

Phase 2: Brencis, Grotesque Ascendant

The second phase drops the wraith summons and becomes a straight duel against a much larger target. The branching limbs give him long reach, so the safe distance you established in phase one is no longer safe. Keep circling and treat every telegraph as a potential unblockable until you see the icon.

The fight ends with a scripted kill. Coen drives his sword in, severs one of the appendages, and forces Brencis back into his humanoid shape, which leads directly into the closing dialogue where he taunts Coen about his mother and a parting “gift” before Coen leaves him to die.

Fighting Brencis early in the Prologue

Brencis also shows up in combat at the end of the Prologue mission “Bad Blood,” where you are underlevelled, wearing starting gear, and not expected to win. Beating him there is technically possible. His moveset is predictable once you have the parry and dodge timing down, and the same rules apply: parry the shield-marked swings, dodge the blood projectile at range and the summoned blood weapons up close. Chewing through his health with a starter sword simply takes a long time.

If you pull it off, a cutscene shows Coen knocking him back, and an irritated Brencis teleports you straight to the endgame arena in Anachora. You unlock the Greifberg Castle region and the Realmwalker achievement for reaching Anachora for the first time. Then you face the Grotesque Ascendant with Prologue-level stats, where a single hit kills you outright even on Story difficulty. Bandai Namco has confirmed it is a legitimate way to finish the game, describing it as possible but extremely hard, with only a handful of developers managing it internally.

There is a far less punishing route to the same “defeat Brencis alone” outcome: after the Prologue, you can enter Greifberg Castle directly, either by scaling the wall at night with Planeshift and Shadowstep, or through the side entrance using the Side Gate Key looted from Georghe, “The Rabid Duke,” at a Racovitza bandit camp. Working with Father Florin through the quest “In the Name of the Father” opens that side door as well.

Which ending the kill gives you

Beating Brencis is not one ending, it is four, and the trophy you get depends entirely on who was standing next to you when the fight started.

EndingCondition
The Folk HeroDefeat Brencis alone, with no allies
The PatricideDefeat Brencis alongside Lacra, after her questline
The KnyazmakerDefeat Brencis alongside Crake and the Manumit
The TurncoatTake his deal instead and betray your allies

Because all of these branch from the same moment, keep a manual save immediately before the final quest. Reloading that save lets you run each version of the confrontation without a second playthrough.

Why the fight never happens

There is a hard deadline on all of this. If more than 30 in-game days pass before you reach Brencis, your family is sacrificed and you lose access to the good endings entirely. Focusing on the Court Activities that unlock Ambrus, Bakir, and Xanthe can get you there in under 10 in-game days, so the timer is generous rather than tight, but it does not stop.

Two other things can quietly close the door before the boss room. Choosing the wrong dialogue during the parley and accepting Brencis’ terms ends the story without a fight, and walking out of Vale Sangora through the western gate past the Coward’s Path Shrine ends it too. Neither is a bug. Both are endings, and both skip the Grotesque Ascendant entirely.
