Leveling in Where Winds Meet runs on a Solo Mode cap system that limits how high your character can climb each day, then releases stored progress in a burst once you clear a Breakthrough. The fastest way to gain levels is to feed high-value quests into that system while your cap climbs, so no earned EXP goes to waste.
Quick answer: Push Main Story and Jianghu Legacy quests first (they give the highest EXP per completion), keep earning EXP even at the cap because it is stored, then pass each Solo Mode Breakthrough to release that stored EXP and instantly gain several levels.
How the Solo Mode level cap works
Your character earns EXP automatically from nearly every activity, but you can only level up to the ceiling set by your current Solo Mode Level. Each Solo Mode Level unlocks after a set number of Exploration Days, which count how long your account has been active. When you hit the cap, leveling stops and any further EXP is saved as Stored XP.
| Solo Mode Level | Max Character Level | Exploration Days |
|---|---|---|
| Level 1 – Beginner | 15 | 1 |
| Level 2 – Emerging | 20 | 1 |
| Level 3 – Observe | 30 | 2 |
| Level 4 – Roaming | 40 | 3 |
| Level 5 – Dreamscape | 50 | 5 |
| Level 6 – Clarity | 55 | 9 |
| Level 7 – Understanding | 60 | 18 |
Higher Solo Mode Levels raise more than the cap. They scale up the rewards from every activity, including gear tiers (up to tier 96 and beyond), coins, and base EXP. That is why reaching Level 15 quickly matters. Once you pass that first threshold, the value of everything you do jumps.

To raise your cap past its current limit, you complete a Breakthrough. This is an arena challenge where you defeat waves of enemies within a time limit, ending with a stronger boss. Passing it unlocks the next level range so your character can keep climbing.
The key detail is Stored XP. If you keep completing quests while capped, that EXP does not vanish. It builds up in a hidden pool and applies retroactively the moment you clear the next Breakthrough, often granting multiple levels at once. Treat time spent at the cap as productive, not blocked.
Note: At higher tiers, a Breakthrough may sit behind a real-time countdown before it becomes available. You cannot rush it even if your power is ready, so plan a story push right after the daily reset and spend the rest of the day banking EXP.
A common trap is leveling faster than your gear. The world scales to your expected power, so attacks that were survivable early can one-shot you later if your defenses lag. If content becomes too hard, you can temporarily lower your Solo Mode level by 1, though the better fix is upgrading gear to the current cap before pushing a Breakthrough.
The fastest EXP sources, ranked by value
Quests give the largest single-source EXP in the game. Prioritize them in this order, and mix in the repeatable activities below to keep your Stored XP filling while you wait on caps.
| Activity | EXP value | Why it matters |
|---|---|---|
| Main Story & Lost Chapter quests | Up to 60,000+ EXP per quest | Highest single-source EXP; unlocks new regions, gear, and bosses |
| Jianghu Legacy quests | Highest base EXP among quest types | Story-heavy missions that also unlock combat skills and bosses |
| Exploration quests | Significant EXP | Unlocks map areas, fast travel, and more content |
| Side quests | Steady EXP | Short and plentiful; ideal for topping off a level |
| Bounty Hunting (Jianghu Bounty) | 2,000 EXP per hunt | Consistent, repeatable target kills |
| Arena PvP (1v1, 3v3) | 2,000 EXP per match | Fast matches that clear quickly |
Level 1 to 15: stick to the Main Story
Getting to Level 15 takes roughly 45 to 70 minutes if you stay focused. Follow Main Story Quests only, since they give the best EXP per minute. Skip mob farming and side quests for now because their rewards are too low before the cap opens up.
Do activate Stone Pillars for fast travel and interact with Bonfires to clear map fog as you pass them. Grab Curiosities only when they sit directly on your quest path. When you reach Level 15, take the Breakthrough quest right away to unlock the next reward tier.
Level 15 and up: add branch quests and exploration
After the first Breakthrough, reward quality climbs enough to justify branching out. Keep pushing the Main Story toward Kaifeng, then fill gaps with Major Branch Quests, Minor Branch Quests, and any Jianghu Legacy quest you find. If you are short on EXP, pick up Swordsman Records for extra character and talent EXP.
While exploring, complete the Five Tone System in each map by collecting Curiosities. These boost Constitution (your max HP) and unlock Lightness Skills that improve survivability and mobility, both of which help you clear content faster.
Repeatable activities that bank EXP while capped
Once you are sitting at a cap waiting on a Breakthrough, switch to repeatable content. Everything here feeds your Stored XP pool, so it all pays out when the cap lifts.
Casual Co-op in Wandering Paths
Casual Co-op events such as Blessed Land, Five Animal Frolics, and Well of Heaven Special Training are largely AFK-friendly. You can gain passive EXP and gold simply by standing in the designated zones, making these ideal to run in the background.

Smart Assist for Hero’s Realm and Sword Trials
The Smart Assist feature lets AI bots clear Hero’s Realm and Sword Trial dungeons for you. The trade-off is reduced rewards, roughly 15,000 EXP instead of the 23,000 EXP you get from a full manual clear. You must also claim the reward chests within 2 minutes of completion or they are lost.

Joint Battle for tripled rewards
Joint Battles let you triple your rewards, including EXP, from Sword Trial outposts by spending 60 energy per run. This is one of the most efficient ways to convert your daily energy into character progress.

Bounty Board and Arena PvP
Jianghu Bounty hunting awards a flat 2,000 EXP per completed target, making it reliable filler between quests. Arena PvP matches, both 1v1 and 3v3, also give 2,000 EXP each and finish quickly, so they add up fast during a session.
Still Shore boss farming
The Still Shore boss, accessed through the Mysterious Book, is one of the fastest bosses to farm. Runs can finish in under three minutes for tripled rewards, and it also drops Umbra weapon tips, which help you keep your weapon leveled alongside your character.
Keep your gear level with your character
Fast leveling only helps if your power keeps pace. The upgrade level of your weapons and gear is capped by your character level, so enhance them whenever your level rises. Shorter fights from stronger weapons directly increase how much EXP you earn per minute.
Keep your main weapon close to your character level and push its Breakthroughs, which add large flat stats. Around Level 50 you unlock the Arsenal system, which slots older gear for passive Attack and HP bonuses that persist even after you swap items. Gear below Tier 41 that cannot be slotted should be recycled into Tuning Stones for later upgrades.
You know your leveling loop is working when clearing a Breakthrough triggers an immediate jump of several levels from your Stored XP. If your level is not moving at the cap, that is expected. The progress is banked and will release the moment you pass the next arena challenge.
