Every Protection and Battle Idol location for feeding the Forge of Potential in the Valheim 1.0 update.

The Valheim 1.0 update introduces Protection and Battle Idols, a set of collectible items that feed into the Forge of Potential and let you craft powerful new gear. The idols themselves come in tiers tied to familiar metals, and each type hides inside specific structures across the biomes you already explore.

Quick answer: Loot chests, pots, and barrels inside biome-specific ruins to collect idols. Bronze and Iron idols appear in early crypts and ruins, while Black Marble, Flametal, and Deep North idols require Ashlands, Mistlands, and Deep North structures.

What Protection and Battle Idols are used for

Idols are crafting materials, not equipment. You place them into the Forge of Potential, where they unlock access to stronger weapons and armor. Protection Idols and Battle Idols are separate item types, so you need to gather both variants at a given tier to open up the full range of gear that tier supports.

Each idol stacks up to 20 in your inventory, which makes it worth clearing every chest and container in a location rather than grabbing a single copy and moving on.

Every Protection and Battle Idol location

The table below lists each idol and the structures where it can appear. Idols spawn as loot inside containers, so you will find most of them by searching chests, and in a few cases by breaking pots and barrels.

Where to look first based on your progress

The idol tiers follow the game’s normal progression, so target locations that match the biomes you can safely reach.

  • Early game: search Troll Caves in the Black Forest along with half-buried crypts and stone house ruins for Bronze idols.
  • Mid game: clear Swamp crypt rooms, ruins, and graves to pick up Iron idols.
  • Late game: raid Mistlands Dvergr towers, Ashlands Morgen holes and Charred Fortresses for Black Marble idols, and Deep North structures plus Mörkhalla for Flametal idols.

Because several idols share the same structures, a single thorough sweep of a Mistlands tower or a Deep North settlement can hand you multiple types at once.

Confirming you have what you need

An idol counts once it appears in your inventory as a stackable material with its own icon and name. When you interact with the Forge of Potential, any idols you are carrying become available to spend on unlocking the gear tied to that tier. If a recipe stays locked, you are still missing either the Protection or the Battle variant for that tier, so return to the matching structures and keep searching containers until both are in hand.

Since idols are loot drops rather than guaranteed rewards, expect to visit more than one ruin or crypt of the same type before every idol you want turns up. Keep exploring the biome that matches the tier you are chasing, and the collection fills in as you clear more sites.
