Blox Fruits: How to Get the Lightning Bolt for the Mad Scientist

The Skylands secret quest comes down to one cloud that flashes dark gray, and knowing exactly how to break it.

The Skylands secret quest comes down to one cloud that flashes dark gray, and knowing exactly how to break it.

The Mad Scientist in the Skylands sells the Electric fighting style, but he also hands out a task that has nothing to do with money. He wants a Lightning Bolt, and the item is not sold, dropped by an enemy, or hidden in a chest. It is stored inside a single cloud floating somewhere above the island group.

Quick answer: Accept the task from the Mad Scientist at the base of the Skylands, then fly through the island group until you spot the one cloud that flashes dark gray, hit it with any attack, and carry the Lightning Bolt back to him.

Mad Scientist location in the Skylands

The Skylands sit in the First Sea and are built for players around level 150 to 190. The bottom island is the only grounded one in the chain, and that is where the Mad Scientist waits. Come in by the docks, turn left, and look behind the pair of large rocks near the tree line. He is tucked out of sight, which is why plenty of players sail past him entirely.

Walk up to the Mad Scientist until the green interaction ring appears under your character. His dialogue reads “Fetch me a Lightning Bolt first,” with two options below it. Pick I’ll get you one rather than Walk Away.

Check the quest tracker on the left of your screen. It should read “Took the Mad Scientist’s task. Bring back a <Lightning Bolt>.” If that line is not there, the task never registered and the cloud will not give you anything.

How to find the dark gray flashing cloud

Every cloud in the Skylands looks identical at a glance. Exactly one of them, chosen at random each time, pulses dark gray or near-black on a short loop. That flash is the only tell. There is no marker, no beam, and no sound cue, so the search is entirely visual.

Get airborne. A flight move such as Light Flight or Draconic Soar covers the area fastest, but air jumps and dashes work too since the islands are linked by bridges and easy to climb.

Sweep the cloud layer in passes rather than circling randomly. Fly along one side of the island chain, turn, and come back on the next line over so you never recheck the same patch twice.

Look at the undersides. The flash is much harder to catch from above, so drop below the cloud layer and glance upward on your return passes. This is where most searches stall.
Once you spot the flashing cloud, hit it. Basic M1 punches, a sword swing, or a fruit move all count, and touching it can trigger the pickup as well. The cloud breaks and the Lightning Bolt goes straight into your inventory.

Turning in the Lightning Bolt and confirming completion

Fly back down to the base island and speak to the Mad Scientist again. The dialogue changes from the fetch request to a hand-over prompt, the Lightning Bolt leaves your inventory, and the quest tracker line disappears. That is your confirmation.

The delivery also credits one of the three hidden objectives tied to the Lower Skylands island map. If you are working toward the full three-star completion for the area, this is the one that gets checked off.

Why the Lightning Bolt quest does not trigger

A handful of specific things stop this from working, and none of them are about your level or your fruit.

  • You are attacking ordinary clouds. Only the flashing one holds the item. A cloud that stays uniformly white will never drop anything, no matter how many times you hit it.
  • You never checked the undersides. The flash is easy to miss from above, and this is the single most common reason a full lap turns up nothing.
  • You ran out of energy mid-flight. A “Low energy! 50 Energy required” warning cuts your movement short. Land, let it refill, then resume the sweep.
  • The NPC is glitched after a portal. Players who arrive through a portal can see the Mad Scientist in the First Sea display “[Not Enough Money.]” instead of his normal dialogue. Rejoin the server and approach him without using a portal.

The Mad Scientist also appears in the Second Sea by the Hot and Cold volcano and in the Third Sea at the Castle on the Sea, but those versions are shop-only. The Lightning Bolt exchange happens in the Skylands and nowhere else, so plan the trip around the First Sea island chain.
