The strongest gear in Valheim 1.0 is not something you mine your way into. Nord weapons crafted from Bloodgold are the new top tier, but their elemental versions — the Frostfire and Thunderblood lines — only exist if you feed an Ancient Altar in the Deep North and beat what comes out of it.
Quick answer: Collect three Memorial Coals in a Morgkala Dungeon, place them in the Ancient Altar’s bowl, kill the ghost Viking it summons, then spend the Frostfire or Thunderblood Essence it drops at a level 4 Black Forge.
What you need before touching the Ancient Altar
This is endgame content, and the ritual assumes you already have a Deep North base up and running. Turning up with Ashlands gear and nothing else will waste your coal.
- At least three Memorial Coals — the altar consumes all three per summon.
- A base Nord weapon of the type you want to convert, made from Bloodgold at the Frost Foundry.
- 20 Bloodgold spare on top of what the Nord weapon already cost you.
- A Black Forge upgraded to level 4, or the elemental recipes will not appear.
- Ashlands-tier armor and food, since the mini-boss hits like a Deep North encounter, not a side objective.

Memorial Coal comes out of Morgkala Dungeons, the Deep North’s underground complexes. Inside, you are fighting Krigin in tight corridors while working through the lit braziers scattered around the rooms — that combination is what fills your inventory with coal.

Clear the dungeon properly rather than rushing the first brazier you see. Three coals is the minimum for one summon, and there is no partial offering, so a half-explored run usually means a second trip.
Bring a blunt weapon underground. Nothing about Morgkala rewards fighting in cramped spaces with a two-hander you cannot swing.
Summoning the ghost Viking at the Ancient Altar

The drop is either a Frostfire Essence or a Thunderblood Essence. That single item is the gate on every elemental weapon in the game, so if you want both lines, you are running the altar more than once — and farming three more Memorial Coals each time.
Crafting Frostfire and Thunderblood weapons at the Black Forge
Essences are not standalone weapons. Each elemental weapon is an upgrade applied to its plain Nord counterpart at a Black Forge that has been built out to level 4. Anything below that and the recipes stay hidden, which is the most common reason players think the essence is bugged.
The Thunderblood Atgeir shows the pattern clearly. It calls for a Nord Atgeir, 20 Bloodgold, and one Thunderblood Essence — base weapon, metal, essence. Craft the Nord version first at the Frost Foundry, then bring it to the forge.
The base weapon is consumed. Decide which weapon type you actually want to carry to the end of the run before you commit an essence to it.
Deep North weapon stats compared
| Weapon | Physical | Elemental |
|---|---|---|
| Thunderblood Sledge | 225 Blunt | 45 Lightning |
| Thunderblood Sword | 180 Slash | 45 Lightning |
| Thunderblood Crossbow | 264+ Pierce | 45 Lightning |
| Frostfire Sword | 138 Slash | 88 Frost, 12 Fire |
| Nord Greatsword | 210 Slash | — |
| Nord Bow | 100 Pierce | 10 Spirit |
Thunderblood Sledge is the raw damage pick, and its damage scales with your missing health, so it gets stronger exactly when a fight is going badly. That is a double-edged design — it rewards staying in melee range on low HP.
Thunderblood Sword trades the top damage number for a free hand. Keeping a shield equipped matters more than the stat gap in most Deep North encounters, and it is the safer default if you block and parry rather than dodge.
Thunderblood Crossbow is the ranged answer. It has the highest listed physical damage of the three, though the slow reload means it works best as an opener rather than a sustained weapon.
Frostfire Sword combines three damage types through frost and fire, while its slowing frost effect remains unmatched for controlling crowds. Use it to clear packs instead of focusing on one large target.
Which element to pick for Kall Fimbulbringer
If you are building specifically for the final boss, the element is almost irrelevant and the physical damage type is everything. Kall Fimbulbringer resists pierce, fire, frost, and lightning, which strips the bonus off nearly every flashy option in the Deep North lineup.
Blunt is the type that gets through. That makes the Thunderblood Sledge the fight’s default answer even though its lightning component does little, and it is why crossbow users typically swap to a hammer for the encounter. Everything else is a preference call about how you like to play.
How to confirm it worked
Three checkpoints tell you the chain is on track. Memorial Coal appears as a stack in your inventory after clearing braziers in Morgkala. The altar bowl accepts the offering and the ghost Viking spawns the moment the third coal goes in. The essence drops as a glowing item on the snow once the mini-boss dies.
The final confirmation is the crafting menu. With the essence, the base Nord weapon, and 20 Bloodgold in your inventory, the elemental recipe becomes selectable at a level 4 Black Forge instead of greyed out. If it is still greyed out, check the forge level first — that is the piece people skip.

One last thing worth planning around: your weapon skill level still does more for your damage than the tier on the item. A Thunderblood weapon in a skill you have barely touched will feel worse than the Ashlands gear you already leveled. Convert the weapon type you have been swinging all game, not the one with the biggest number.
