The Bottomless Well Amber sits in a hidden chest in the very first area of Valor Mortis, tucked behind a burnable barrier on the snowy cliffside. You can collect it during the prologue the moment you gain the Fire Transmutation, long before most players realize backtracking is already possible.

Quick answer: Get the Fire Transmutation from the tutorial cutscene, backtrack to the snowy branch section near the first Lantern (Onslaught Arch), burn the orange fleshy growth against the cliff wall, and open the red chest behind it.

What the Bottomless Well Amber does

The Bottomless Well Amber gradually restores spent Nephtoglobin as time passes. Nephtoglobin powers your Transmutations, and this automatic refill sustains Fire and your other abilities without using a Vial.

It is a three-level Amber, starting at Upgrade Level 1 / 3. Finding additional copies later in the game upgrades the one you already hold rather than giving you a duplicate.

Picking the Amber up early does not mean you can use it right away. Amber slots unlock through the Lantern upgrade track, and the first slot opens at Level 5. Until then the Amber sits in your inventory, ready to equip once you reach that milestone.

How to reach the Bottomless Well Amber in the prologue

The route relies on first unlocking the Fire Transmutation, then returning to a spot you have already passed. Follow the opening tutorial as normal, then double back.

Play through the opening section where the game teaches parrying and branch jumping. Cross the snowy cliffside by leaping between the climbable tree branches, following the prompt to jump onto them for extra distance.

Reach the open clearing and rekindle the first Lantern (Onslaught Arch). This sets your respawn point, so if you fall or die during the detour you will return here rather than restart the stretch.
Crouch beneath the fallen log just past the Lantern and continue down the forest path. Defeat or slip past the bulky enemy that guards the road. This is the fight the game uses to teach Unblockable Attacks, marked by a red glow and dodged with a well-timed R1.
Follow the muddy road past the broken carts and through the ribcage-like archway. A cutscene triggers here and grants you the Fire Transmutation, the flame power channeled through your bandaged right hand.

Face back the way you came and follow the route in reverse. Duck beneath the fallen log, pass the Lantern once more, then jump over the climbable branches to return along the snowy cliff ledge.

Look for the orange, webbed fleshy growth tucked against the cliff wall on the far side. Use the Fire Transmutation to burn it away, revealing the alcove behind it.
Inside the alcove, open the ornate chest, which is red and gold, and take the Bottomless Well Amber.

Confirming you have it and equipping the Amber

Opening the chest adds the Bottomless Well Amber to your inventory immediately. Check the inventory menu and you will see it listed at Upgrade Level 1 / 3 with the Nephtoglobin regeneration description.

To actually use it, rest at a Lantern and open the Level Up menu. The Amber slot stays locked until you hit Level 5 on the Lantern upgrade track, so keep leveling as you play through the opening hours. Once the slot opens, interact with a Lantern to slot the Amber in.

With the Amber claimed this early, you already have a steady Nephtoglobin drip waiting for the moment the slot opens, which makes leaning on the Fire Transmutation far easier through the first stretch of William’s journey.
