Defection is the eleventh mission of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, sitting between Stranded and Counter Attack. It drops the player into a night raid on a North Korean military site called Airbase 3, where the job is to sabotage mobile ballistic missile launchers, cover a defecting officer, and hold a runway long enough to escape by helicopter.
Quick answer: Defection is a single-player mission that moves from a stealth hangar sabotage under night vision into a runway defense where control swaps between three squad members, ending with a helicopter escape and the destruction of the airbase.
Where Defection takes place and who you play
The mission is set at Airbase 3, a North Korean facility near Hajin City. You spend most of it as Private Park Hyun-Jun, the recurring campaign protagonist, moving alongside team leader Kal and a wider squad that includes Lieutenant West, Dunn, Moon, and sniper Sergeant Jae. A North Korean officer, Ko Jin-Hyuk, plays a central role in the story as the defector the operation is built around.
Defection is playable solo only. Like the rest of the Modern Warfare 4 campaign, it has no co-op, though AI squadmates fight alongside you throughout.

The opening plays out inside a vehicle hangar. Kal opens the entrance and the squad arms up from a weapon rack, with radio coordination coming in from Ko Jin-Hyuk. After breaching the first corridor and clearing two guards, the team cuts the power, which plunges the building into darkness and forces everyone onto night-vision goggles.

Through the dim storage corridors, the squad advances, taking out disoriented soldiers who cannot see. The main task is to rig three individual trucks carrying mobile ballistic missile launchers, positioned at different points across the hangar floor.

The first charge goes on a launcher’s wheel assembly, and the second follows after clearing patrols across the floor. By the time the third charge is being set, North Korean reinforcements flood the hangar, so the final sabotage happens in the middle of a firefight rather than in silence. Once all three charges are placed, the squad regroups at the exit door and leaves the compound.

Ko Jin-Hyuk takes the control tower
The cinematic shifts from the squad to Ko Jin-Hyuk climbing the outside of the control tower. In a radio exchange, he challenges Commander Ri Ju-Young over loyalty to Korea, then takes the tower for himself. His defection gives the mission its name and leads into the second half, when the squad must hold on while the evacuation is organized.
Runway defense and the three-way character swap
The back half turns into a layered defense of the runway while the squad waits for extraction. Play rotates between three positions, each with a different role, and the mission tells you when to move between them with on-screen prompts to swap to Jae or swap to Dunn.

- Park Hyun-Jun holds ground-level cover behind barricades, sniping and firing on infantry pushing across the open tarmac.
- Sergeant Jae provides sniper overwatch from high in the control tower using a suppressed rifle, picking off roof snipers and ground squads.
- Dunn runs heavy ordnance with an RPG-8, breaking up mortar teams and destroying armored BMPs and vehicle convoys.

The attacks escalate in stages. Infantry push through smoke screens, combat dogs sprint the defensive line, armored BMPs roll through the main gate, and an enemy Mi-24 Hind gunship eventually appears overhead and has to be shot down with RPG rockets. The war dogs are worth flagging because they trigger a close-range quick-time event, with an on-screen prompt to press V right before the dog reaches your throat.

Objective text through this stretch spells out the shifting targets, from killing enemies attacking Dunn and West to disrupting mortar teams, destroying trucks to the southeast with the grenade launcher, and taking out three BMPs.
The runway escape and the detonation
Once the defense holds, a South Korean rescue helicopter touches down at the end of the runway and Park sprints the length of the tarmac under heavy fire to board it. The callsigns tied to the extraction appear on screen as Tiger 0-1 and Anchor-1.
Boarding the helicopter is not the end. The mission immediately prompts you to hit the remote detonator, with a “DETONATE” cue on screen, and the charges planted earlier level the airbase in a single large blast. Hesitating on that prompt fails the mission, so the escape and the demolition are effectively one action.
The final cutscene takes place aboard the exfil helicopter. Ko Jin-Hyuk shows the high-tech cylinder canister recovered in the raid, presenting it as the squad’s strategic advantage in the operations ahead.
