In Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4’s DMZ mode, you never deploy as yourself. You deploy as one of your Active Duty operators. New to the mode? Start with how DMZ works.
Quick answer: Earn DMZ XP to gain trait points. Spend them in the Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist trees. Prestige an operator at 18/18 points with rare gear and cash. A failed exfil marks that operator Missing In Action.
DMZ Active Duty roster: Three operator slots
Your roster lives on the ACTIVE DUTY screen, which holds three operator cards. An empty slot shows a “+” that lets you recruit a new operator into it. The Traits and Operators screens track how full the roster is with counters such as “ACTIVE DUTY (2/3)”, “ACTIVE DUTY (3/3)” and “OPERATORS [3/3]”.
Each card shows three things you will check often:
- The operator’s name, such as UCTF, SAS or MIN-HEE.
- A dog tag tier badge, such as STEEL, BRONZE I or ONYX III.
- The operator’s trait point count, for example “18 TRAIT POINTS”.
The equipped operator has EQUIP and MANAGE buttons under its card. That operator’s backpack and loadout grid sit beside the cards, so you can see what they will carry into a deployment.

Trait points come from DMZ XP. Open an operator’s Traits screen and a bar along the bottom counts down your progress as “<number> XP TO NEXT TRAIT POINT”. Unspent points appear as a large number in the middle of the screen, sitting above the words “TRAIT POINTS”.
An operator tops out at 18 trait points. At 18, that operator is at maximum level and becomes eligible for prestige.
DMZ trait trees: Warfighter, Scout and Survivalist
The Traits screen is split into columns. WARFIGHTER is red, SCOUT is gold and SURVIVALIST is teal. A fourth tab, PRESTIGE, marked with a crown icon, sits next to them.
Only the first traits in each tree are visible from the start. Slots further down show a “?” until you unlock them. Hovering one shows “RANDOMIZED TRAIT: Revealed when a trait from the previous row is acquired.” In practice, the lower rows are randomized, and you uncover them as you work your way down a tree.

To spend a point, hover over a trait and choose “ACQUIRE TRAIT”.

Trait effects in the DMZ trees
The six traits below are a sample of what the trees contain, not a complete list. The effect text matches what the game displays.
- KILLING SPREE (Warfighter): “Killing enemies increases the duration of active effects, up to twice their normal duration.”
- ADAPTIVE RESTOCK (Warfighter column): “Enemy hostiles drop one additional item…”
- EQUIPMENT PROFESSIONAL (Warfighter column): “Slowly recharges equipped Lethals and Tacticals after use. Refills up to the max capacity of the slot.”
- LT HUNTER: “Activating a Lieutenant Tower grants additional paid intel.”
- METABOLISM (Survivalist): “Slowly regenerate health lost via tourniquet.”
- DIEHARD (Survivalist): “Approaching an exfil while in Last Stand calls the exfil automatically. Also grants infinite bleed out time while in Last Stand.”

DMZ operator prestige requirements
The Prestige Operator screen reads “AVAILABLE WHEN 18 TRAITS ACQUIRED” and lists three requirements. Each one gets a tick once you meet it.
- EARN 18 TRAIT POINTS, shown as 18/18.
- EQUIP RARE GEAR on that operator’s loadout or backpack: WEAPON (2/2), PLATE CARRIER, BACKPACK and PRINTER INGREDIENT (4/4).
- REQUIRED CASH, paid from your bank.
The screen states “Everything left on your operator will be consumed.” Strip anything you want to keep before you confirm.
The gear has to be equipped on the operator you are prestiging, not just stored somewhere. For the stations you use between deployments, see the DMZ FOB guide.
Requirements by prestige level
The requirements rise with each prestige level. Multiplayer prestige works differently: see Classic Prestige vs Prestige.
| Requirement | First prestige | Second prestige |
|---|---|---|
| Two weapons | Three attachment slots | Four attachment slots |
| One plate carrier | Rare | Epic |
| One backpack | Rare | Epic |
| Four 3D Printer ingredients | Rare | Epic |
| DMZ cash | 200,000 | 300,000 |
The third prestige, and every prestige after it, calls for two weapons with four attachment slots, a Legendary plate carrier and a Legendary backpack.
Once you prestige, the operator starts earning trait points again from zero. When it reaches 18 a second time, the next prestige opens up.
Missing In Action: What happens when you fail to exfil
If you don’t make it out, the after-action report opens with “FAILED TO EXFIL” and “MISSING IN ACTION” over the operator you deployed with.

Back on the Operators screen, that operator’s card carries a “MISSING IN ACTION” notice that reads: “You can re-enlist this operator after paying for their retrieval, or you may dismiss them and recruit new talent.”

That leaves two options. You can pay for the operator’s retrieval to re-enlist them, or dismiss them and recruit a new operator into the freed slot. To keep playing right away, equip one of your other operators and deploy with them instead.
