Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse Talos Escape Timer Not Starting? Turn Off Prevent Death

If the end of the second Talos stage leaves you stuck with no 01:30 countdown, one Custom Mode checkbox is the cause.

Talos breaking loose and sinking in the lower arena cutscene in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Near the end of the Talos fight in the Clock Tower, the game is supposed to hand you a timed escape. If you play with Custom Mode and its “Prevent death” option switched on, that countdown never shows up and the fight stalls with no way forward.

Quick answer: In Settings > Gameplay, clear “Prevent death” before entering the fight, or before delivering stage 2’s final core hits. The cinematic continues, followed by a 01:30 escape countdown.

What the problem looks like

The trouble starts in stage 2, down in the lower arena. When Talos’s health bar drops to a small sliver, a short scene kicks in. Your controls lock for a few seconds while the camera dips down and comes back up.

With Prevent death on, nothing follows. You get control back, Talos has vanished from view, and his bar sits frozen at that sliver. No timer appears on screen, and waiting doesn’t change anything.

With Prevent death on: control comes back, Talos is gone and no timer appears.
  • Striking the former core location has no effect.
  • Neither end of the floor activates anything.
  • Standing on either central platform triggers nothing.
  • Rose’s position when the scene starts makes no difference.

There’s no way to finish the fight from this state. Open the pause menu and choose System > Main Menu (or Last Save). That returns you to your last Mirror of Life save, and the Talos fight starts over from scratch.

Why it happens

Stage 2 ends with a timed escape; when the countdown expires, Rose dies. Prevent death is there to keep Rose alive. If it’s enabled, the escape sequence never begins.

Put simply, Prevent death on means no escape timer. Prevent death off means the escape starts as normal.

How to fix it: untick Prevent death

Open the pause menu, switch to the System tab, and select Settings. Then open the Gameplay tab.
Look for the “Prevent death” box in the list under “Enable “Custom Mode””, which is ticked if you’re playing in Custom Mode.

Prevent death ticked under Enable “Custom Mode” in Settings > Gameplay.
Clear Prevent death, then confirm the change. At the bottom of the menu, the prompt reads “Apply the changes”; press Space on PC.

Prevent death unticked. The rest of Custom Mode can stay as it is.
Leave the rest of Custom Mode alone if you like, including Damage dealt, potions, and Allow respawn in front of Boss doors. Only Prevent death blocks the escape.
Change this before beginning the Talos fight, or no later than your final core hits in stage 2. Already stuck after the scene? Exit to the Main Menu using the method above, disable Prevent death, then take on Talos again.

With the setting disabled, stage 2 concludes as intended. Letterbox bars appear; Talos breaks free and drops, and the camera moves down to Rose on the lower arena’s right central platform. A prominent 01:30 shows near the top of the screen, confirming it worked.

With Prevent death off, the 01:30 escape timer appears after the cutscene.

The timer then continues in a small box at the boss bar’s left edge along the screen’s bottom. For the escape route and final hits, see the full Talos guide.

Rose is vulnerable to death with Prevent death disabled, so keep your potions for the escape. Once Talos is defeated, you can enable Prevent death again.

What happens when the timer runs out

If the countdown hits 00:00, the screen flashes and a “RETRY?” box pops up asking “Do you want to retry combat or respawn to the last Mirror of Life?” You get two choices.

OptionWhere you end up
RetryBoss gate outside the arena, fight restarted
Mirror of LifeYour last Mirror of Life

Retry resets the whole Talos fight to the beginning, with stage 1 and a full health bar. That means working through stage 1 and the gauntlet again before you get another shot at the escape.
