Snowy areas drain your inner fire, making you lose warmth. When Frost Resistance is completely drained, untreated hypothermia makes you lose health rapidly. You stay warm by raising Frost Resistance. You can raise Frost Resistance with food, the Pocket Heater, warm armor, rings or Flaming Gauntlets,, and being near fire also helps.
Quick answer: Use the Pocket Heater or Thyme Tea (+4 each), wear a full craftable warm armor set (+11), and stay near fire. When Frost Resistance runs out, you get hypothermia and lose health rapidly.
How cold and hypothermia work
The game explains the cold system in its “Protection Against The Cold And Hypothermia” tutorial:
The Albaneve Summits can get very cold. Snowy areas drain your inner fire, making you lose warmth.
How fast you’re drained depends on your frost resistance. You can increase your frost resistance by eating certain foods, equipping warm armor, or being near fire.
When your frost resistance is completely drained, you will suffer from hypothermia. Untreated hypothermia will make you lose health rapidly.

In 1.0, nine consumables boost Frost Resistance: the Pocket Heater plus eight foods. The Pocket Heater and Thyme Tea provide the highest bonus, +4 apiece. Ginger Tea adds +3. Beef Stew, Pumpkin Soup, Yellow Glow Soup and Creamy Mushroom Spaetzle each add +2. Grilled Fatty Meat and Spiced Tea each add +1.

At the Hunter, make the Pocket Heater from 1 Metal Sheets, 1 Leather and 1 Coal. The recipe appears once you own Coal. The Frost Resistance bonus lasts 20 minutes. Some older guides list the Pocket Heater at +2 and Beef Stew at +3; in 1.0 they give +4 and +2.
Every food listed is made at a Kitchen except Grilled Fatty Meat. Most recipes additionally require a Cooking Station, the Almanac of Plants and Seedlings, or both, placed near the Kitchen. Water is an additional ingredient for the teas and Yellow Glow Soup.
