Blaze, Shadow Warden Captain, in his golden mask with the chained censer, Phantom Blade Zero

Quick answer: Blaze has 48,560 HP and fights with a flaming censer attached to a chain. Parry when his attacks flash blue, evade the red-marked slam, and keep clear of the middle distance.

Where to fight Blaze

Blaze appears during TOWN OF DEATH, the main quest that starts when you arrive in Pangzhen. When you walk into the central area of town, a short cutscene plays. A young girl named Yu’er shows up in the street, then Blaze arrives, and the fight begins. If you die, you respawn at the South Gate Bridge bell.

The encounter unfolds on a long paved street, with red lanterns and wooden shopfronts along both sides. A tall carved stone gate stands at the far end, while Blaze waits farther down the road.

His golden mask, tall black official’s hat, red embroidered robe and black cape make him easy to spot. The censer he swings from a chain has its own Phantom Edge. Fire Meteor lore says Blaze, leader of the Shadow Wardens, once wielded a chain hammer wreathed in flame.

Blaze’s attacks and how to answer them

He may be right beside you or more than 15 metres away, but chain lashes and leaps let him close in. The censer lash and spinning leap deal most of his damage, so the middle distance is especially dangerous. Watch the flash on his body to choose your response. Blue means parry, red means dodge. A few moves ignore your guard; if one breaks through, dodge it on the next attempt.

Censer lash

At roughly 7 or 8 metres, Blaze draws the chain back before sending the censer forward on a long stream of green fire. It hits about one second after the wind-up and deals around 150 HP. A flame symbol may appear above Soul’s health bar, signaling that Burn is building. Parry the incoming attack or sidestep beyond its path; running directly at Blaze puts you in its way.

Spinning leap

Blaze jumps, spins in the air and crashes down on Soul, dealing about 130 HP. He hits less than a second after taking off, so start reacting as soon as he leaves the ground. You can guard or parry the impact, or dodge away from his target spot.

Close chain whirl

When close, Blaze spins the chain around his body, forming a green ring. The hit comes in under a second and deals roughly 130 HP. Step outside the circle or guard the strike, then attack once he stops spinning.

Red-flash overhead slam

Blaze opens with several rapid chain strikes, each dealing about 40 to 80 HP if they connect. His body flashes red at the end of the sequence.

Roughly half a second later, he slams the censer down overhead. Red-flash attacks cannot be guarded or parried, so dodge as soon as the flash appears.

Blue-flash strings

Some of his chained strikes flash blue before they land, which means you can parry them. Parry every hit in the string. A clean parry throws off sparks. Counter once the string ends.

Red streak burst

Red streaks shoot outward from Blaze toward Soul. Get out of the space in front of him and dodge sideways.

Lunging body slam

Blaze surges toward Soul and crashes into him with his body. Sidestep as he closes in.

Spinning chain sweep

He spins in place with the chain held out in a wide circle, throwing red sparks. Back-step or dodge outside the circle rather than trading hits inside it.

Green fire eruption

Green flames explode across the arena, and a status icon appears above Soul’s health bar. Get out of the fire. Flameward cuts fire damage and Burn buildup in half.

Second phase: Blaze, Phosphor Consciousness

When his first health bar runs out (“Blaze, Shadow Warden Captain”, 48,560 HP), the fight continues. A cutscene plays in which a green glow takes hold of Blaze and he loses control of himself. A second bar then appears under a new name, “Blaze, Phosphor Consciousness”, with 60,700 HP, and he now burns with green fire and leans even harder on fire attacks.

Green fire burst

Green flames flare up from the ground around Soul. While Soul is standing in them, two status icons show above the health bar; one is Burn’s flame symbol. Leave the flames immediately rather than trading hits while inside.

Flame streak

From the far end of the street, Blaze fires a lengthy green-flame trail at ground level toward Soul. Evade to either side; retreating straight backward leaves you in its path.

Twin chain blades

Blaze lifts a pair of green-flaming chains over his head, then brings them down. He can also jump forward and drive a chain down from above. When his arms rise, move sideways to avoid the falling chains.

During this phase, read the indicators as before: blue signals a parry, while red calls for a dodge; certain moves are unblockable. Since green fire makes up most of his attacks now, Flameward is especially valuable, cutting fire damage and Burn buildup in half.

Flameward and other preparation for Blaze

Since the censer inflicts fire damage, equip Flameward before entering the street. Its card reads “Reduces fire damage by 50% and Burn buildup rate by 50%”. Find the accessory in Pangzhen, near the South Gate Bridge bell.

  • After you parry a full string, use the opening to spend Remnant Spark on your Phantom Edge.
  • Keep away from the middle distance. His lash can reach about 7 to 8 metres, and the leap closes space quickly.
  • Wayfarer weakens his hits, and you can change difficulty at any time. His moveset stays the same.
  • The bosses list shows where Blaze sits among the other fights.

Healing safely against Blaze

Each healing gourd restores 561 HP, about 40 percent of Soul’s 1,402 HP. A Pathbreaker attempt can use up all three.

Being far away won’t protect you while healing: his chain can reach Soul from well over 10 metres. In a Pathbreaker attempt, a lash that landed during a heal took about 240 HP, the heaviest hit of the fight. Heal once a string has ended or an attack has left him recovering; don’t use distance alone as your cue.
