Panthalus is the Level 70 Legendary Ocean King, a Water-type boss that closes out one of Palworld’s endgame story quests. You will not stumble across it in the wild. It only appears after you gather four Echobones, craft the Echoing Flute, and summon it at the Deserted Islet. The fight plays out over open water, so ground Pals are useless, and everything hinges on staying airborne while you burn down a huge health pool before the timer runs out.
Quick answer: Fight while mounted on a fast Flying Pal, aim your weapons at the glowing blue crystal on Panthalus’s head for critical damage, fly out over the water to avoid its island-wide AoE attacks, and once its health drops to 1 HP, throw any Pal Sphere for a guaranteed capture.
Before the fight: level, gear, and prerequisites
The Panthalus quest unlocks after you complete The Calamity. Head to the Azure Covenant Tower and speak with Auri, who stands near the cliff outside the tower, to start it. From there you can begin collecting the four Echobones that summon the boss.
Aim for at least Level 71 before you challenge Panthalus. That threshold lets you equip the Ancient Shield and keeps your Pals at a competitive level so they can survive the boss’s heavy Water attacks. Because the arena is entirely water, leave every ground-based Pal at your base and bring reliable flying or swimming mounts instead.

Each Echobone sits near one of the giant whale skeletons scattered across the map. Examine the glowing object at each site to collect it.
| Echobone | Where to find it |
|---|---|
| Marine Echobone | West of the Grassy Behemoth Hills fast travel point. Climb the skeleton’s skull and examine the glowing object. |
| Silent Echobone | Near the Mossanda Forest fast travel point, hidden behind the larger bones of the giant skeleton. |
| Seafoam Echobone | East of the Eternal Pyre Tower Entrance. Enter the skeleton’s skull and examine the glowing object inside. |
| Tidewind Echobone | Near the Land of Absolute Zero fast travel point, beside the base of the skeleton’s skull. |
Craft the Echoing Flute and summon Panthalus

How to beat Panthalus in the fight
Panthalus has a massive health pool of 353,220 HP, and the battle is timed, so you need constant pressure. The whale spends much of the fight moving around the ocean surrounding the island, which makes chasing it on foot impractical. Every part of your approach should keep you mobile and hitting its weak point.
Stay mounted on a Flying Pal
Rather than sending a Pal out to fight on its own, ride a fast Flying Pal for the whole battle. Mounting lets you reposition instantly, keep up with Panthalus as it circles the island, and apply pressure with both your weapons and your mount’s Partner Skill. Bringing a second flying mount is a smart backup in case your main one is knocked out.

Fly away from the big AoE attacks
Several of Panthalus’s attacks cover nearly the entire island, leaving almost no room to dodge on the ground. When you see one winding up, fly out over the open water and return once it ends. Watch for the massive wave attack in particular. When the warning appears, ride the swirling wind vortex on the water’s surface to launch high into the air and glide safely over the wave. The boss also uses tracking bubbles and water tornadoes, which are easiest to outrun by staying airborne and moving.
Aim for the weak point
Target the glowing blue crystal on Panthalus’s head to land critical hits, shown by the large orange damage numbers. Whether you are firing weapons or using mounted attacks, prioritize that spot whenever you have a clean shot. As a Water-type, Panthalus takes heavy damage from Electric-type Pals and attacks, so lean into that elemental advantage.

Best Pals to bring
The strongest picks are mounts that combine mobility with Electric-type damage to exploit Panthalus’s Water weakness.
| Pal | Type | Why it works |
|---|---|---|
| Beakon | Electric | Fast flying mount that keeps pace with Panthalus, with Electric attacks that hit its weakness and strong mobility for dodging AoE. |
| Helzephyr Lux | Electric / Dark | Flying mount with powerful Electric attacks; stays mobile while dealing steady damage and offers good survivability. |
| Solmora Lux | Water / Electric | Excellent swimming mount whose Partner Skill converts your attacks to Electric-type while riding, making consistent Electric damage easy. |
Best weapons and armor
High burst damage at range matters most here, since you want to hit the head crystal while flying. The Rocket Launcher is the standout choice, and other endgame options like a Multi Guided Missile Launcher can stagger the boss between waves.
| Gear | Tech Tier | Key crafting materials |
|---|---|---|
| Rocket Launcher | 65 | Pal Metal Ingot x75, Carbon Fiber x25, Polymer x30, Coralum Ingot x75, Computer x10 |
| Ancient Helm | 68 | Soralite Ingot x20, AI Core x2 |
| Ancient Armor | 68 | Soralite Ingot x30, AI Core x3 |
| Ancient Shield | 71 | Paldium Fragment x250, Ancient Civilization Parts x50, Ancient Civilization Core x30, Soralite Ingot x30, AI Core x5 |
The Ancient Armor, Ancient Helm, and Ancient Shield give the best defense available at this stage. Their high Defense keeps you alive through Panthalus’s powerful Water attacks as you move between the island and the surrounding sea.

Capture Panthalus at 1 HP
Unlike most boss encounters, you finish this one by catching the boss, not killing it. When Panthalus reaches its final sliver of health, a red banner reads “Can be captured with a Pal Sphere!” Throw any Pal Sphere at that point. The catch is scripted and shows a 100% capture rate, so there is no need to save higher-tier Spheres or weaken the boss any further.
You will know it worked when “BOSS ELIMINATED” and “New Pal Captured! Panthalus Lv 70” appear on screen, along with a first-clear bonus. After the capture, speak with the Ancient Civilization Researcher to complete the quest. Keeping the captured whale in your party lets you head to the barrier terminal and unlock access to the World Tree area.
The whole encounter rewards preparation over reflexes. Show up at Level 71 or higher with Electric mounts, the Ancient armor set, and a Rocket Launcher, keep flying to dodge the island-wide waves, and focus every shot on that blue head crystal. Do that and the timer will run out on Panthalus long before it runs out on you.
