Windows 11 typically requires users to sign in with a Microsoft account during the initial setup, but there are reliable ways to bypass this requirement. Using a local account instead of a Microsoft account helps protect your privacy, avoids unwanted synchronization of settings, and keeps your data local. Here are detailed methods to set up Windows 11 without a Microsoft account.

Method 1: Using Command Prompt During Setup

The most reliable way to bypass the Microsoft account requirement is by using a simple command during the Windows 11 setup process. Here’s how you can do it:

Start the Windows 11 installation and proceed normally until you reach the screen asking you to select your country or region. At this screen, press Shift + F10 to open the Command Prompt.
In the Command Prompt window, type the following command exactly as shown and press Enter:
oobe\bypassnro

This command instructs Windows to bypass the online account requirement. Your PC will restart automatically after entering this command.

After the restart, you will return to the setup screen. Again, press Shift + F10 to open Command Prompt. Type the following command to disconnect your PC from the internet and press Enter:
ipconfig /release

Close the Command Prompt window and continue the setup.

Continue the installation by selecting your region and keyboard layout. When you arrive at the “Let’s connect you to a network” screen, click on the “I don’t have internet” option.
Next, select “Continue with limited setup” if prompted. Windows will now allow you to create a local account. Enter your desired username, set a password, configure security questions, and finish the setup process.

This method ensures you can set up Windows 11 without needing a Microsoft account or internet connection at initial setup.

Method 2: Creating a Windows 11 USB Installer with Rufus

If you prefer a more streamlined method, using the Rufus tool to create a custom USB installer is another reliable approach. Rufus allows you to remove the Microsoft account requirement from the Windows 11 installation media itself. Here’s how:

First, download the latest version of Rufus and the official Windows 11 ISO file from Microsoft’s website.
Insert a USB flash drive (at least 8 GB) into your computer. Open Rufus, select your USB drive from the “Device” menu, then click the “Select” button to choose the downloaded Windows 11 ISO file.
Click “Start” in Rufus, and when the customization window appears, check the option labeled “Remove requirement for an online Microsoft account”. You can also select other options, such as bypassing TPM and Secure Boot requirements if needed. Click “OK” to start creating the USB installer.
Once Rufus completes the process, safely eject the USB drive. Boot your PC from this USB drive by restarting and pressing the appropriate boot menu key (usually F12, F8, or Esc depending on your PC manufacturer).
Proceed with the Windows 11 installation. After selecting your language and keyboard layout, Windows will directly present you with the local account creation screen, bypassing the Microsoft account login entirely.

This method offers a convenient, pre-configured approach to installing Windows 11 without any need for manual commands during setup.

Alternative Method: Converting an Existing Microsoft Account to a Local Account

If you have already installed Windows 11 with a Microsoft account and wish to switch to a local account, you can easily convert your existing account:

Click the Start menu and open Settings. Navigate to Accounts > Your Info.
Click the option labeled “Sign in with a local account instead”. Windows will prompt you to confirm your choice and enter your current account’s password or PIN.
After confirming your identity, enter a new username and password for your local account. Follow the prompts to finalize the switch. You will be signed out and can log back in using your new local account credentials.

Please note, if you’re using BitLocker encryption, ensure you back up your recovery key before switching to a local account to avoid losing access to your encrypted drive.
