Windows Search is an invaluable tool that helps you quickly find files, folders, and documents stored on your local storage. Over time, however, you might notice that searches take longer to complete or fail to display results from specific directories. Fortunately, there are several ways to improve the speed and accuracy of Windows Search on your Windows 11 PC.

Modify Indexing Options

Customizing the indexing options allows Windows Search to focus on the directories you use most often, which can significantly enhance search performance.

Click on the Start Menu and select the Settings app.
In the Settings window, choose Privacy & Security from the left sidebar.
Click on Searching Windows in the right pane.
Under the More search indexer settings section, select Advanced indexing options. This will open a new window.
In the Indexing Options window, click on the Modify button.
Uncheck the directories that you rarely search or those containing a large number of files. By reducing the number of indexed locations, you can speed up the search process. Make sure to keep the folders where you commonly store important files checked.
Click OK to save your changes. Windows will update the search index according to your selections, which may take some time.

Rebuild Search Index

If modifying the indexing options doesn’t resolve the issue, rebuilding the search index can fix problems caused by a corrupted index.

Open the Settings app from the Start Menu.
Select Privacy & Security from the left sidebar.
Click on Searching Windows in the right pane.
Scroll down and select Advanced indexing options to open the Indexing Options window.
Click on the Advanced button in the Indexing Options window.
Under the Index Settings tab, click on Rebuild in the Troubleshooting section. Confirm by clicking OK.

Windows will now rebuild the search index. This process may take some time, but it can resolve many search-related issues.

Disable Web Search in Start Menu

Disabling web search results in the Start Menu can improve search speeds by focusing solely on local files and folders.

Open the Registry Editor by searching for it in the Start Menu and selecting it from the results.
Navigate to the following path by copying and pasting it into the Registry Editor’s address bar and pressing Enter:
Computer\HKEY_CURRENT_USER\Software\Policies\Microsoft\Windows
Right-click on the Windows folder, hover over New, and select Key. Name the new key Explorer.
Right-click on the Explorer key you just created, hover over New, and select DWORD (32-bit) Value. Name this new DWORD DisableSearchBoxSuggestions.
Double-click on DisableSearchBoxSuggestions and set the value data to 1. Click OK to save the changes.
Restart your computer to apply the changes. Web search will now be disabled in the Start Menu, which can enhance search performance.

Run Windows Search and Indexing Troubleshooter

Using the built-in troubleshooter can automatically detect and fix common search issues.

Open the Settings app from the Start Menu.
Ensure that System is selected in the left sidebar.
Click on Troubleshoot in the right pane.
Select Other troubleshooters.
Locate the Search and Indexing troubleshooter and click Run.
Follow the on-screen prompts to complete the troubleshooting process. The troubleshooter will attempt to identify and fix any issues affecting Windows Search.

Restart Windows Explorer

Restarting Windows Explorer can resolve temporary glitches that may be slowing down the search function.

Right-click on the Taskbar and choose Task Manager from the context menu.
In the Task Manager, click on Run new task at the top.
Type explorer.exe into the text box and press Enter or click OK.

Your desktop may momentarily disappear and reappear as Windows Explorer restarts. Check if the search functionality has improved after restarting.

Update Windows

Ensuring that your system is up to date can fix underlying issues and improve overall performance, including that of Windows Search.

Open the Settings app from the Start Menu.
Click on Windows Update in the left sidebar.
Click on Check for updates. If updates are available, select Download & Install.
After the updates have been installed, restart your PC to apply the changes.

By applying these methods, you can enhance the speed and accuracy of Windows Search, making it easier to find the files and documents you need.
