Mistfall Hunter: Best Mercenary Build (Sword and Shield)

Stack Sword Tip fast, reach Blade Edge, and hit the Stacked Slash with the right skills, talents, and affixes.

Stack Sword Tip fast, reach Blade Edge, and hit the Stacked Slash with the right skills, talents, and affixes.

The Mercenary in Mistfall Hunter is the most forgiving frontline in the game, and its sword and shield line turns steady melee pressure into a heavy burst finisher. The core of a strong setup is simple. You build Sword Tip stacks, enter Blade Edge, and cash them in with a single high-damage hit while your shield keeps you alive.

Quick answer: Spam Impalement (hold left mouse) to gain two Sword Tip per cast, reach six stacks to enter the Blade Edge stage, then press left mouse followed by right mouse to release Stacked Slash. Run Whirling Cut and Shield Slam, take the Sword Edge, Blade Charge, Stacking Blade, and Bounce talents, and equip the Stoic and Fervid affixes.

Sword Tip and the Blade Edge loop

The whole build revolves around one resource. Every sword-based hit feeds Sword Tip stacks, and the fastest way to build them is Impalement. Hold the left mouse button to cast it. It deals damage on its own and grants two stacks of Sword Tip per cast.

Once you reach six stacks of Sword Tip, you enter the Blade Edge stage. Keep feeding stacks and you move into the Blade Edge state. From there, press left mouse and then right mouse to unleash Stacked Slash, which deals a large chunk of physical damage in one swing. The rhythm is the same every fight. Poke to build, tip over the threshold, and dump the burst.

Note: You know it worked when the Stacked Slash lands as a single heavy hit instead of a normal swing. If it does not fire, you have not crossed the required Sword Tip threshold yet, so keep casting Impalement before committing.

Best sword and shield skills

Two skills carry this setup. They cover crowd clearing, boss damage, and a defensive reset, which is everything the Mercenary needs to hold a line.

  • Whirling Cut dashes forward and performs two slashes that deal heavy physical damage. It works well against packs of minions and against single bosses.
  • Shield Slam unlocks at level 7 and changes how the build survives. You raise the shield and jump before smashing the ground, dealing physical damage and slowing enemy movement speed for a short time. During the jump you block all frontal attacks and gain a window of Super Armor.

Shield Dash is another solid option if you want a stronger gap closer and interrupt, pairing naturally with Whirling Cut for pressure. The priority stays the same. Keep Impalement building stacks while these skills handle positioning and the finisher.

Talents for faster Blade Edge

The talent goal is to reach Blade Edge sooner and hit harder once you are there. These four form the backbone.

TalentEffect
Sword EdgeGrants more Sword Tip from every sword-based skill attack
Blade ChargeIncreases damage while you are in the Blade Edge stage
Stacking BladeLowers the requirement to enter Blade Edge and Strong Edge to four Sword Tips
BounceEssential once Shield Slam is equipped

Stacking Blade is the standout because dropping the threshold to four Sword Tips means your Stacked Slash comes online faster and more often. Sword Edge feeds that loop, and Blade Charge makes each burst window count.

Affixes for survival and uptime

Two affixes keep the Mercenary trading well through both the healthy and the low-health parts of a fight.

AffixWhat it does
StoicRaises damage resistance below 50% health and automatically heals you if health drops below 30%
FervidWhile health is above 70%, reduces skill cost and increases both physical and magic damage

The two affixes cover opposite ends of the health bar. Fervid rewards you for staying topped up with cheaper skills and more damage, while Stoic protects you the moment a fight turns and pulls you back from the edge with the sub-30% heal.

How it plays in a fight

This is a versatile setup that leans toward damage without giving up the class’s natural durability. Open by holding left mouse for Impalement to bank Sword Tip, use Whirling Cut to close and cut through targets, and drop Shield Slam when you need to block a frontal burst or slow an enemy that is trying to run. When your stacks tip into Blade Edge, follow the left mouse into right mouse input to land Stacked Slash for a big spike.

The Mercenary is excellent in PvE and holds its own in solo play thanks to that mix of protection and burst. It is slower than mobile classes and can be kited by ranged fighters like the Sorcerer, so lean on Shield Slam’s Super Armor and slow to force enemies into your range. Hammer is a viable alternative branch that trades consistency for higher raw damage, but the sword and shield loop above gives you the cleanest, most reliable payoff.
