The 1-Up Token is the retro-flavored power-up added to Fortnite Chapter 7 Season 4, and it does exactly what a 1-Up did in arcade games. Hold one, get eliminated, and you rift back into the match instead of watching the death screen. It sits in your inventory without eating a loadout slot, and it works in solos as well as squads.
Quick answer: Kill a boss (Doctor Eggman or Hush), throw a Llama Supply Drop Gizmo and loot the crate, or claim an Override Console that rolls the Extra Life buff. Any of those puts a 1-Up Token in your inventory.
What the 1-Up Token does when you die
There is no button to press. The token is consumed automatically the moment you would otherwise be eliminated, which makes it closer to Kenny’s Respawn Token than to the Self-Revive Device from Chapter 7 Season 3. You are rifted into the sky and redeployed over the island, then glide back down wherever you choose.

Your inventory comes back with you. Weapons, ammo, Gold Bars, your collected Sprites and even a Victory Crown carry over, and you land at full health. Shields are the exception, so plan on drinking or scavenging as soon as you touch down.

Two limits are worth knowing before you plan around it. You can only hold one active token at a time, and once it is picked up it cannot be dropped or handed to a teammate.

Four sources put the token in your hands during a match, plus one scheduled event window. Boss drops are the most dependable if you can win the fight.
| Source | What you have to do | How reliable |
|---|---|---|
| Boss drop | Beat Doctor Eggman or Hush at their marked POI | Guaranteed drop |
| Llama Supply Drop Gizmo | Throw the Gizmo, open the llama crate it calls in | Guaranteed, but you need the Gizmo |
| Extra Life Match Override | Claim an Override Console that rolls Extra Life | Random, buffs are shuffled per match |
| 8-Bit Shotgun score | Rack up a high enough score with the shotgun | Requires a long combo streak |
| Golden Hours drop-in | Play during the scheduled event window | Handed out at match start |
Beat Doctor Eggman or Hush
Open the map and look for a red skull icon. Bosses rotate around Green Hill Zone, Reality’s Reign and Stone Sanctum, and neither of them is especially punishing to fight with a decent shotgun. Eggman’s loot pile is the richest one on the island, dropping a 1-Up Token alongside Sonic Power Sneakers, a Mythic 8-Bit Shotgun, a Chug Jug and Gold Bars.
Call in a Llama Supply Drop

Claim the Extra Life Match Override
Override Consoles appear in every match, marked on the map with a game cartridge symbol, and eight of them are scattered around the island. Claiming one rewrites a rule for the server, and Extra Life is one of the buffs in the pool. When it lands, your whole squad carries a 1-Up Token for the rest of the match.
The catch is twofold. The buffs are randomized per match, so there is no way to force an Extra Life roll, and claiming a console broadcasts your squad’s location to the lobby.
Build a high score with the 8-Bit Shotgun
The 8-Bit Shotgun tracks a running score as you hit players and bosses, with a multiplier that climbs on consecutive hits and resets to zero the moment you miss. Push that score high enough in a match and the gun awards a 1-Up Token on its own. It spawns from floor loot and chests in both Battle Royale and Zero Build.
Golden Hours event window
Golden Hours run on Saturday, August 22 from 2–4PM ET and again from 9–11PM ET. Drop in during either block and you start the match with a 1-Up Token, a Portable Extractor and better odds of finding Midas’ Masterpiece.
How to confirm the token is active
Pick one up and the HUD flashes 1-UP TOKEN POWER UP ACQUIRED. That banner is the only confirmation you need. Because the token never occupies a weapon slot, it is easy to assume the pickup failed, so watch for that message rather than scanning your hotbar.

Note: collecting tokens also feeds the Meowscles Wrixel quest that asks you to acquire eight Power Ups. The 1-Up Token and the God Mode Llama are the two items that count toward it.
Because the token fires automatically and cannot be stockpiled, the practical play is to grab one and then commit to fights you would normally avoid. It is most valuable late, when the zone is tight and a single knock ends your match, and it doubles as insurance on any Sprites you have spent the game collecting.
