Challenge 5 in Chapter 1 of Halloween: The Game is one of the fastest optional objectives in the campaign, and it is also one of the easiest to lock yourself out of. It asks for a single thrown kill, and the weapon you need is sitting a few steps inside the first building you break into.
Quick answer: Enter the Rabbit in Red, turn into the kitchen on the left, pick the Throwing Cleaver off the counter, then hold right-click to aim and left-click to bury it in any target. The banner reads “CHALLENGE 5 COMPLETE” the moment that target dies.
Challenge 5 conditions and reward in Chapter 1
The wording in the challenge list is deliberately loose. It does not name a victim, so the bikers, the bartender, and any resident in the bar all count. What it does demand is that the cleaver is thrown, not swung.
| Detail | Specifics |
|---|---|
| Condition | Kill any target with a Throwing Cleaver |
| Chapter | Chapter 1 — The Road To Haddonfield |
| Weapon location | Kitchen counter inside the Rabbit in Red |
| Valid targets | Any target, including bikers and the bartender |
| Reward | Toby’s jacket cosmetic |
| Retryable | Yes, by replaying the chapter |
Where to find the Throwing Cleaver
The reliable spawn is the pub kitchen. Once the door to the Rabbit in Red opens, the kitchen is immediately to your left, and the cleaver rests on a counter in plain sight. Interacting with it prints “Inventory Item Added” and drops whatever you were holding, which is usually the Broken Bottle from the parking lot fight.
Cleavers can also turn up later in the chapter, around the gas station and in the houses along Copper Lane, but those spawns shift between saves. Treat the kitchen as the guaranteed option and the street houses as a backup if you have already pushed past the bar.
Note: Chapter 1 challenges tied to the Rabbit in Red stop being available once you leave the building and the chase objective takes over. If you walk out without a thrown kill, restart the chapter rather than hunting for a cleaver outside.
How to land the thrown cleaver kill

How to confirm the challenge registered
You get a clear on-screen confirmation. The “CHALLENGE 5” prompt swaps to “CHALLENGE 5 COMPLETE”, and the Toby’s jacket unlock appears alongside it. Completion is recorded at that moment, so what happens next in the fight does not matter.
That is worth repeating, because the bar fight often goes badly right after the throw. If the remaining bikers drop you and you get the “GAME OVER” screen with “MICHAEL WAS DOWNED”, the challenge stays completed. You can restart from the last checkpoint or return to the main menu without losing it.

Why the thrown cleaver kill fails to count
There are only a few ways this one goes wrong, and all of them come down to how the killing blow lands.
- You used the cleaver as a melee weapon. Light and heavy attacks with it in hand do not satisfy the condition.
- The throw only wounded the target and something else finished them, such as a follow-up punch or an execution.
- You left the Rabbit in Red without the kill, which closes out the bar-bound challenges for that run.
- You never picked the cleaver up, because entering with a weapon already equipped makes the counter easy to walk past.
The game’s melee combat tutorial nudges you toward light and heavy attack combos plus Shoves to interrupt and stagger targets. That advice is fine for clearing the room, but keep it separate from this challenge. Shove a biker to create space, then throw.

Chapter 1 can be replayed freely, so there is no reason to chase all six of its challenges in a single run. A dedicated attempt that opens the door, grabs the cleaver, throws it, and lets Michael get downed afterward takes under a minute and still banks the Toby’s jacket.
