Yes, Final Fantasy Resonance retells an existing story. Square Enix says it “is based on the story of FFBE’s first season”, but it is a reworked version built for console and PC, not a port of the mobile game.

Quick answer: Final Fantasy Resonance retells the opening season of Final Fantasy Brave Exvius in a redesigned edition for consoles and PC; it isn’t the mobile release ported over, and FFBE experience isn’t a prerequisite.

What Final Fantasy Resonance is based on

Square Enix is the publisher, with development handled by Square Enix alongside LANCARSE Ltd. It arrived on 22 October 2026 for PC through Steam, as well as other platforms. Its story is based on the first season of FFBE, and so are its main characters.

The game opens with Rain and Lasswell, two knights of Grandshelt, and they take center stage on the main menu.

Fina soon joins them, introduced on screen as “The Girl Without a Past”. Her title card reads “An ingenuous girl with mysterious powers who embarks on a journey to remember her past.” If you know FFBE, these are the same main heroes.

The look is new. The Steam page calls it “the first FINAL FANTASY to join the HD-2D lineup”, and the game pairs “pixelized 3D models” with dynamic camera angles.

What changed from Brave Exvius

The story follows the same arc, but the telling is different. Square Enix says “the scenario, dialogue, and overall presentation have been reworked and rebuilt specifically for a console RPG experience.” Expect the same season-one setup with a rewritten script.

Visions

Visions carry over from FFBE. The Steam page describes them as “echoes of beloved FINAL FANTASY characters, who fight alongside you with unique skills and abilities”. Square Enix says “You will find all of the Visions by exploring the world and fulfilling side content!” The first two Visions are Tronn, a Breaker, and Leah, a Medic, which you equip from Equipment & Abilities.

Battles and side content

Combat runs on turn-based strategy. You can “exploit enemy weaknesses to stagger them” before unleashing “powerful Resonance attacks”. Rain’s Limit Burst, Infinity Drive, appears in battle.

The Steam page lists the following optional content:

  • The wandering swordmaster Gilgamesh
  • A Colosseum
  • The Chamber of Arms
  • A showdown with Ultima Weapon

Do you need to play Brave Exvius first?

No. Square Enix says “no prior knowledge of FFBE is required.” Final Fantasy Resonance introduces Rain, Lasswell, Fina, and Grandshelt from the beginning, so new players can start here.

The free demo lets you try the game before you buy. The Steam page says “you can freely explore the entire first chapter“, with some level restrictions, and your demo save carries over to the full game.

Is it a new Final Fantasy game?

It is a standalone release that retells FFBE’s first season. It does not continue the story. Square Enix puts the main story at about 30-40 hours, plus optional content. You explore the Kingdom of Grandshelt on a world map, with a yellow quest marker showing the way to your next objective.
