Shuten Doji is the fight where Musashi stops arguing with the thing bolted to his arm. Billed on screen as “The Demon on the Mount,” the encounter takes place inside a temple on Mount Oe, where the Oni traitor sits surrounded by feasting demons and pools of blood. It ends with the departed Oni handing Musashi their full power — the transformation the whole first half of Onimusha: Way of the Sword has been building toward.
Quick answer: The full Oni Gauntlet transformation is not a meter you fill or an item you use. Survive into the third phase, after Shuten Doji’s head detaches into a floating flaming skull, and the awakening cutscene plays on its own. Musashi drops back in as an Oni with flaming sword strikes for the final phase.
Oni Awakening trigger in the Shuten Doji fight
The transformation is tied to fight progress and to the story beat that sits on top of it, not to blue souls or an unlockable skill. You cannot pull it early, and you cannot miss it by playing badly — the only requirement is staying alive long enough to push Shuten Doji through his second phase change.
The narrative condition matters because of what happens right before this chapter. Musashi has already been beaten by Ganryu, briefly considered eating human souls to close the gap, and decided against it. In the temple he mocks Shuten Doji for exactly that shortcut, admits he is not strong enough alone, and asks the gauntlet for the power to finish the job. Shizuka’s line is the cue that the phase is about to flip: “Now is the time—unleash your true might as an Onimusha!”
The Oni souls inside the gauntlet then judge him worthy and pour everything they have into him. It is the same power set Ono no Takamura carries as an Onimusha, granted here because Musashi trusts his allies instead of harvesting the dead.
Getting into the Mount Oe temple
The gate only opens for one visitor: the monk who brings Shuten Doji meat and blood. Musashi finds that monk on the road, drops him with arrows, and watches him reveal himself as an Oni before he dies. Taking the garb is what gets Musashi past the gatekeeper.
There is a second condition. The gatekeeper asks where the woman is, because Shuten Doji also demanded the prettiest girl in the village. Shizuka offers to play the part, Musashi tells her she would be seen through instantly, and Okuni turns up having tailed them the whole way. She rides in on the cart, the gate opens, and the three of them walk into a hall full of demons mid-feast.

Shuten Doji recognizes Shizuka on sight and greets her as an old acquaintance. She names him as Ura and calls him a traitor to the Oni — he sold them out to Minamoto no Yoshitsune, guided the Genma into the upper strata of hell, and was later remade as a Genma by Dokyo’s hand. He brags that he is invincible thanks to every human and Oni he has devoured, which is the exact claim Musashi throws back at him.

Shuten Doji fight phases and attacks
The objective reads “Defeat Shuten Doji,” and the health bar labels him “Shuten Doji – Gourd Drainer.” That nickname is a mechanical warning, not flavor.
| Phase | What he does | What to do about it |
|---|---|---|
| 1 | Wide swings with his giant sword, plus fire breath | Reflex Dodge with Circle just before a hit lands; cut him off before the fire breath comes out |
| 2 | Drinks from his gourd to restore health | Interrupt the drink — every sip you allow undoes damage you already dealt |
| 3 | Head detaches and floats as a flaming skull; the headless body keeps attacking | Split your attention between the two targets and keep the burning ailment off you |
| 4 | Musashi fights in Oni form with flaming sword strikes | Press the advantage; his defenses no longer hold up |
Fire is the through-line. When the burning status lands, the on-screen prompt tells you to evade repeatedly with Cross to shake it off, and the Reflex Dodge prompt appears the first time he winds up a heavy swing. If you want the exact control mapping for any of it, the game’s online manual lists the inputs per platform.

Phase three is where most runs fall apart. The floating skull taunts and repositions while the body swings blind, so you are dodging two attack sources at once in a room that is already on fire. This is the stretch you have to survive; the awakening is on the other side of it.

Oni Armaments and items that shorten the fight
Oni Armaments run on blue souls and hit far harder than the katana, and landing them feeds yellow souls back to you for healing. Two are worth bringing here, along with three consumables that cover the fight’s specific problems.
| Name | Effect |
|---|---|
| Earth-Shakers | A pair of Oni hammers that drain enemy stamina. Hold Triangle to increase their power. |
| The Flashing Void | An Oni lightning spear that heavily reduces enemy breath and produces a lot of red souls. |
| Soul Sucker | Temporarily boosts the effect of enemy souls you absorb. |
| Major Miracle Cure | Cures burning and oil-soaked, briefly prevents both, and blocks Malice damage. |
| Heavy Restorative | Restores health gradually over a long duration. |
Stamina damage is the lever that matters. Draining it opens Break Issen, and against a boss that does not execute outright — instead you choose between a burst of heavy damage or a larger soul payout. Take the damage option if the gourd heals are eating your progress.
How to confirm the transformation triggered
Control is taken away for the cutscene, so there is no input to get wrong. Musashi absorbs the full power of the gauntlet on screen, and Shizuka states plainly that the Oni have deemed him worthy of their power. Shuten Doji’s reaction is the other tell — he demands to know how a fallen Oni’s power reached him.
Back in gameplay, Musashi is visibly in Oni form and his sword strikes come out wreathed in flame. Damage output climbs sharply and Shuten Doji’s guard stops mattering. The fight ends when you destroy the floating head.

The outro keeps the win small on purpose. Musashi says he feels like he took a step along his path, Shizuka agrees that it was a step — just one — and then offers to walk the rest of it with him so he does not end up lost the way Yoshitsune and Ganryu did. Okuni immediately accuses him of blushing. From here the trio heads back out, and the next threat is Arashiyama.
