A Bandit’s Gratitude is a short Wandering Tale in the Greenshade Village Part 3 set of Where Winds Meet. It takes place on the southern slope of Crownleek Terrace in Qingzhou’s Eastern Peak region. A greenwood marauder named Zhang Gou is skulking in the bushes there, and he only appears after dark. You beat him, hear his story about a lost coin bag, find the bag, and decide where the money goes.

Quick answer: Set the time to night, defeat Zhang Gou in the grove south of Crownleek Terrace, pick up the Bag of Silver Coins near the lake, then give it to Zhang Gou or Wang Ajiu.

Zhang Gou location and night requirement

Zhang Gou does not exist in the world during the day. Open the in-game Time wheel and move the clock to night, anywhere from the Xu hour onward. Zi (midnight) and Chou both work. Then head to the tree grove south of the Crownleek Terrace Boundary Stone. He wanders the stretch between the Boundary Stone and the lake.

If you would rather follow landmarks, take the path leading away from Crownleek Terrace until you pass a chest and an NPC named Chen Rushi. Zhang Gou roams on the left side of that path. The Crownleek Terrace Landmark teleport point is the quickest way into the area, and the grove sits southwest of Wellspring Town.

A Bandit’s Gratitude walkthrough

Walk into the grove at night until the bandit spots you and starts a fight. Drain his health bar completely. He won’t die; he yields once his health runs out.

Talk to the defeated bandit, who introduces himself as Zhang Gou and ends up sitting beneath a pine tree. He says he lost a coin bag holding three taels of silver and 129 coins, money he meant for the man who once helped him, Ajiu. A “Wandering Tales – New Clue Acquired” prompt confirms the tale has started.

Head south across the road toward the lake. The bag sits on the grass inside a triangle formed by three trees, close to two enemies patrolling by the water, who show up as red dots on the mini-map. Switching the clock to daytime makes the spot much easier to see.
Interact with the glowing prompt labeled “A Bag of Silver Coins” to pick it up. The item description confirms it was hidden in the brush south of Crownleek Terrace and holds the full three taels and 129 coins.

Open the Wandering Tales Details screen and check A Bandit’s Gratitude. A new entry appears, logged after acquiring the bag of silver, which confirms the pickup counted.

If you changed the clock to daytime for the search, open the Time wheel again and set it back to night. Zi hour is a safe pick. Zhang Gou won’t be at his spot until it is dark.

Return to the tree on the slope where you left Zhang Gou and talk to him. Pick “Give,” then submit A Bag of Silver Coins. If you want the other ending, take the bag to Wang Ajiu instead, as described below.

Zhang Gou or Wang Ajiu: who gets the Bag of Silver Coins

Once you hold the bag, the tale lets you return it to Zhang Gou or skip the middleman and pay his old benefactor directly. Both choices end the quest, the endings play out much the same way, and the rewards are identical.

EndingWho to visitWhere
Ending 1Zhang GouUnder his tree in the grove, at night
Ending 2Wang AjiuCrownleek Terrace fields, by a row of leeks

Wang Ajiu works the fields at Crownleek Terrace and can be found crouched near a raised terrace. If you give the bag to Zhang Gou, he thanks you and leaves that night to find Ajiu himself.

A Bandit’s Gratitude rewards and completion check

Handing over the bag triggers the reward screen immediately.

RewardAmount
Echo Jade30
Qingzhou Exploration10
Coin3,750
Experience3,750 Stored EXP or 5,625 Character EXP

The Echo Jade, Qingzhou Exploration, and Coin payouts stay the same across completions. The experience line is the one that differs, showing up as 3,750 Stored EXP on some characters and 5,625 Character EXP on others.

You’ll know the tale is finished when the Wandering Tales log shows its closing entry. For the Zhang Gou ending, it notes that he took the coin bag and left, along with the hope that he will someday hand a desperate youth flatbread and copper coins the way Ajiu once did for him. A Bandit’s Gratitude then appears as completed under Greenshade Village Part 3.
