The Ravenous Bear is one of the first walls new players hit in The Blood of Dawnwalker. It has a deep health pool, it moves faster than its size suggests, and it swings from angles that make button-mashing a losing plan. The fight is not a damage race. It is a rhythm test built around parries and one very obvious tell.
Quick answer: Block and parry every normal claw swing to stagger the bear, then land exactly two counter-hits before backing off. When a red skull icon appears above it, stop blocking and dodge sideways, because that attack cannot be blocked. Repeat until its health bar empties.
Where the Ravenous Bear shows up in Vale Sangora
This is not a one-off boss. Ravenous Bears appear across every region of Vale Sangora, and each one uses the same moveset, so the strategy you learn at the first encounter carries over to the rest. Coen can run into them while chasing quest objectives or while poking around for treasure.
| Encounter | Where it happens |
|---|---|
| A Pilgrimage for Power: Bear Trouble | Up the windchime path northwest of the Briar Sloughs tower, in the southern part of Laslea Glen |
| Wisp Treasure Hunt: Watermill Hills | Southwest of the Sloughside Mill Shrine, at the end of the cliff path the wisps lead you down |
| Bandit’s Treasure Map: Laslea Glen | Southeastern side of Laslea Glen, near a cave, guarding the treasure |
| Outlaw’s Gorge | Roaming boss with identical behaviour to the quest versions |
For the Bear Trouble version, you need to have finished Smoke and Ashes first. Follow the windchimes and the yellow-wrapped cairns up the mountain, use Focus Mode to pick out the footprints past the abandoned camp, and the bear is waiting in the open area at the top.

Three moves carry the whole fight. Two of them are blockable and one family of them is not. Learning which is which is most of the battle, because the bear punishes anyone who holds block through a red-skull attack.
| Attack | Tell | Counter |
|---|---|---|
| Maul | Claw swipes that come in from several different angles | Parry in the direction of the swing, then punish with your own strikes |
| Leap Attack | The bear shifts to one side, then lunges in with a bite | Dodge to the side early; the timing is tight and it can still clip you if you react late |
| Ground Stomp | The bear rears up on its hind legs before slamming straight ahead | Dodge backwards out of the slam zone, or sideways to clear the front arc |
| Charge | Red skull icon, straight-line rush that knocks you down | Dodge left or right; blocking will not stop it |
The red skull icon is the single most important cue on screen. It marks an unblockable attack, and Coen cannot absorb those with his guard at all. The instant it appears, release block and roll to one side rather than trying to trade.

The parry and punish loop that kills the bear

What does not work against the Ravenous Bear
Pocket Sand is close to useless here. It stuns the bear for roughly a second before it goes right back into its attack chain, which is not enough time for a meaningful punish.
The other two common failures are mechanical. Holding block through a red skull attack will not reduce the damage, and stringing more than two attacks after a parry usually means you are still swinging when the next maul lands. If the fight keeps ending badly, it is almost always one of those two habits rather than a gear problem, though levelling your skills for higher damage does shorten the encounter.
Ravenous Bear drops and how to confirm the kill registered
When the health bar empties, Coen remarks on the size of the beast, a new glossary entry for “Bear” is added, and the quest tracker updates on screen. That quest update is your confirmation that the objective counted. Then loot the carcass.

| Drop | Amount | Type |
|---|---|---|
| Bear Liver | 1 | Epic Ingredient |
| Bear Meat | 3 | Common Ingredient |
| Bear Fur | 1 | Crafting material |
| Animal Bones | 2 | Crafting material |
The Bear Liver is the standout, since Epic Ingredients are not something you pick up casually. The kill itself pays out only a small amount of XP, so the real reward sits in the quest it unblocks.
Finishing Bear Trouble after the bear falls
With the bear down, the next objective asks you to explore the top of the hill. On the western side of the area there is a Uriash body, and examining the wound on its forearm reveals a symbol. The bloody knife near the stones fills in the rest, pointing Coen toward witchcraft.
Return to the centre of the stone circle and inspect the Uriashi glyph carved there. Coen copies it down, and reading the resulting scroll in your inventory unlocks the next tier of the Ravenous Flock power. Completing the side quest awards 250 XP and the Ravenous Flock Manual, and inspecting the glyph costs two time segments, so plan it around whatever else you have running that day.
Once the parry rhythm clicks, every other Ravenous Bear in Vale Sangora becomes a formality rather than a roadblock, whether it is guarding a bandit’s treasure or standing between you and a set of wisps.
