Cosmetics in Onimusha: Way of the Sword cover four slots for Musashi. You can restyle his outfit, his haori coat, his sword appearance, and his Oni Gauntlet. Every option is visual only, so none of them changes damage, speed, or any combat stat. The looks come from three places, which are story progress, rescuing Lion Dogs, and paid editions.
Quick answer: Visit any Spirit Mirror after the mission “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu,” pick Change Appearance, then select the sword, haori, outfit, or gauntlet look you want. Weapon skins come from saving Lion Dogs (one skin per six, all 36 for the full set), haori and outfits come from finishing story missions and Boss Rematches; and the rest are edition bonuses claimed under Additional Content.
Where to change and claim skins
All appearance swaps run through the Spirit Mirror, the same points you use to save and fast travel. Charms are handled separately in the Equipment menu and do affect combat, so keep the two systems apart. The cosmetic menu and the DLC claim option unlock at different story beats, which is normal and not a bug.
You know a change worked because the new look applies immediately in the Change Appearance preview and carries into gameplay. If a claimed DLC item still does not show, you have not reached the story unlock point yet, so keep playing until the menu opens fully.
Katana skins from Lion Dogs
Every in-game sword skin is tied to Lion Dogs, Lady Murasaki’s pets scattered across the map. There are 36 in total, their locations are marked on your map, and you earn a new katana appearance for each group of six you rescue. The first Lion Dogs become reachable in Chapter 11, “What Lurks in the Shadows,” so you cannot pick up any weapon skins from Lion Dogs earlier than that.

The default No Name katana is what you start with. Note that all of these blades are cosmetic, even the ones that look enchanted. They behave exactly like a normal tamahagane steel blade in combat.
Haori coats from story missions
Haori are the over-garments Musashi wears on top of his outfit. You unlock new ones by clearing specific story missions in either Story/Action or Carnage Mode. Because the missions play in a fixed order, you cannot miss any of these haori or choose which comes first.

The Gauntlet-Hiding Haori is your starting coat. Clearing the same missions in Carnage Mode opens up additional haori options beyond the base set.
Outfits from story missions and Boss Rematches
New outfits come from completing story missions, including ones given by Lady Murasaki, and from clearing all Boss Rematch fights. Finishing the same challenges in Carnage Mode unlocks even more clothing. Keep in mind that some outfits block you from wearing a haori at the same time.
The Tasuki Sash outfit unlocks after “The Stage is Set at Kiyomizu.” Finishing the full story also grants two novelty costumes, the Wataru-kun mascot suit and the Panda Costume, whose item text winks at the long-running series tradition of dressing Musashi in a panda outfit. Clearing every Boss Rematch in the Practice Grounds rewards a further outfit.
Pre-order and Deluxe edition skins
The rest of the cosmetics are locked to pre-orders and the higher editions, and you claim them at a Spirit Mirror under Additional Content. These cover extra sword skins, one outfit, the gauntlet skin, several haori, and companion looks for Okuni and Shizuka.

The Deluxe Edition sits at $79.99 and the Premium Deluxe at $89.99. If sword skins are your priority, the Deluxe tier already includes every paid blade. The extra $10 for Premium Deluxe adds the three haori, the companion outfits for Okuni and Shizuka, and the digital soundtrack, with no additional sword appearances.
Note: the pre-order Sealed Curse and White Lion skins are tied to the early-purchase window that runs through late September 2026. Capcom has not confirmed whether they return as paid content afterward, so treat them as pre-order rewards for now.
Since none of these looks touch your stats, the choice comes down to how you want Musashi to fight through Kyoto. Rescue Lion Dogs at your own pace for the katana set, follow the story for the haori and outfits, and claim your edition bonuses once the Additional Content option appears at a Spirit Mirror.
