Storage Hunters: How to Unlock The Onyx Contract Quest (Roblox)

Free Mike from jail, hit 1,575% luck, and clear the full mutated item checklist to unlock the 175x Onyx mutation.

Onyx sits at the top of the standard mutation ladder in Storage Hunters: Open World, and it is the one mutation you cannot stumble into. There is no drop chance, no auction that hands it over, and no gem purchase. It exists behind a single one-time job called The Onyx Contract, given by an NPC named Mike, and he will not even offer it until you have broken him out of the police station jail and stacked your luck stat into four figures.

Quick answer: Break Mike out of jail using a Home Carpet and spoons, then speak to him in the Back Alley with at least 1,575% luck active to accept The Onyx Contract, and hand in the full checklist of mutated items (100 Silver through 2 Rainbow) to unlock the Onyx mutation permanently.

Onyx mutation stats: 175x value multiplier

Onyx multiplies an item’s value by 175x, which is 75x higher than Rainbow, the mutation directly below it. Once unlocked, Onyx enters your pool of possible mutations, so items you pull afterwards can roll it. There is a secondary payoff too. An accessory carrying the Mutated Luck stat in the Head slot grants +75% Luck when its strongest mutation is Onyx.

How to free Mike from the police station jail

Mike starts locked up, and his jailbreak mini-quest is the gate on everything else. You need to get yourself arrested twice, gather two specific items, and dig your way out through the cell floor.

Head to a seized auction in the highest area you have unlocked, such as Business Bay. Seized auctions are where the contraband lots show up.
Bid on and win the lots labelled “Redacted”. Winning those raises your wanted level, which is the whole point of the trip.
Let the police catch you instead of running. Getting arrested drops you straight into the jail cell at the police station.
Talk to Mike inside the cell to pick up his supply request. He asks for the gear he needs to tunnel out.
Collect several Spoons from the Junkyard. Spoons sit at the bottom of the rarity pool, so drop your luck stat to 0% before hunting them, because high luck actively pushes you away from low-rarity finds.
Find a Home Carpet in the Back Alley. This one works the opposite way, and you want at least 100% luck running before you start opening Back Alley containers.
Get arrested a second time with both items in hand, lay the Home Carpet down inside the cell, and use the spoons to dig the tunnel underneath it.
Follow the tunnel out and speak to Mike where it surfaces near the Back Alley. That conversation officially frees him and moves him to his permanent spot.

Note: Mike keeps a repeatable Bank heist available in the Back Alley once he is out, but the heist is separate from the contract and is not a prerequisite for it.

Starting The Onyx Contract in the Back Alley

With Mike free, walk to his new position in the Back Alley and check for the red exclamation mark above his head. If the marker is missing, your luck is the problem, not your progress.

The contract only appears while you are sitting at 1,575% luck or higher, and that number has to be live on your stat sheet when you talk to him. Stacking a Luck Drink 3, which grants +342% luck, on top of luck accessories such as the Dino Shell Bracelet, Race Valk, and Crypto Necklace is the usual way to clear the threshold. Accept the contract before the drinks tick down, because the requirement is checked at the moment you speak to him.

The Onyx Contract item checklist

The contract itself is a collection job that runs the full mutation ladder from Silver up to Rainbow. Ten separate counters have to be filled, and the top few are what turn this into a multi-day grind rather than an afternoon.

MutationItems required
Silver100
Gold75
Corrupted50
Diamond35
Gem25
Chrome20
Hologram15
Void10
Secret5
Rainbow2

The low-count tiers are the ones that stall people, and which tier stalls you is largely luck of the draw. Chrome, Void, and Hologram are the usual holdouts, and the two Rainbow items tend to arrive whenever they feel like it rather than on any predictable curve.

Farming the mutated items faster

Run the contract out of the highest area you have access to. Business Bay works well because the containers there feed the high-tier mutation rolls you actually need, and grinding a lower area mostly buries you in Silver and Gold you already finished.

Keep your luck stat topped up for the whole session rather than only when you talk to Mike. Higher luck pushes rolls toward the rarer end of the mutation table, which is exactly where the Chrome, Hologram, Void, Secret, and Rainbow counters live. The one exception is any errand that asks for a common item, where you want luck at zero instead.

Sell everything that does not count toward a counter as you go. The contract eats hours of auctions, and clearing duplicates keeps your inventory usable while the cash funds the next round of bids and luck drinks.

How to confirm Onyx unlocked

Filling all ten counters does not finish the job on its own. Return to Mike in the Back Alley and hand the contract in. On turn-in, the on-screen banner reads “QUEST COMPLETE! The Onyx Contract [Onyx] Mutation unlocked”, and Onyx appears in your mutation list from that point forward. The contract does not reset or repeat afterwards.

Why The Onyx Contract will not appear

There are only a handful of reasons Mike refuses to hand over the contract, and all of them are prerequisite failures rather than bugs.

SymptomCause and fix
No exclamation mark above Mike in the Back AlleyYour live luck stat is under 1,575%. Drink and re-equip luck gear, then talk to him again.
Mike is not in the Back Alley at allHe is still in the jail cell. Complete the tunnel escape and speak to him at the tunnel exit first.
Cannot find a Home CarpetSearch the Back Alley with at least 100% luck active.
Cannot find SpoonsDrop your luck to 0% and search the Junkyard, since high luck suppresses low-rarity finds.
Never get arrested at the auctionYou need to win the “Redacted” lots specifically, then stay put and let the police reach you.

The jailbreak takes maybe half an hour once you know the order of operations. The contract itself is the real cost, and it is worth budgeting several long sessions in your best area rather than expecting to clear the Void, Secret, and Rainbow counters in one sitting. Get the luck stack right first, and the rest is just auction volume.
