The sixth optional challenge in the Smith’s Grove Prologue of Halloween: The Game asks for a full sweep of the sanitarium grounds. Michael starts sedated and slow after the Thorazine injection, the rain kills visibility, and the normal escape route deliberately skips most of the staff. That is the problem — the story path lets you leave long before the grounds are empty.
Quick answer: Kill or terrify every orderly on the grounds before you pry open the gate — executions and orderlies who successfully flee both count — then finish the chapter and reach the station wagon, or the challenge progress will not save.
Kills and escapes both count toward the orderly total
The challenge is worded as “kill or drive away every Orderly before you escape,” and that second half matters more than most players assume. An orderly who breaks free of a grab and runs far enough to trigger the “ORDERLY ESCAPED” notification is removed from the active group. He no longer needs to die.
That gives you two clean ways to clear a target. Grab an orderly and use the execution prompt, or let the grab break in his favour and give him room to run instead of chasing him down. Bodies left where another orderly can find them also cause panic, which is how groups scatter on their own once the first execution lands in the open.
Note: the escape credit takes a moment to register, because the orderly has to physically get far enough away. Do not follow him and do not assume the count failed if nothing pops immediately.

Depending on how the grounds populate, the sweep runs to roughly ten to twelve orderlies spread across the yard, the roads, the woods on the right, the elevated path, the power-box area and the slope up toward the institute. Extra staff can also appear back near the opening area after you have already moved past it.
Rather than counting toward a fixed number, treat the challenge banner as the finish line. Keep a running total that includes anyone who fled, sweep the map in a loop, and stop the moment the challenge registers. The grounds are small, so a return pass costs less time than second-guessing yourself at the gate.

Challenges you can clear on the same run
A full sweep naturally puts you next to almost every other Prologue objective, so there is no reason to run them separately. The one exception is the no-alert challenge, which requires the opposite of everything above and belongs on its own attempt.
| Challenge | Where it fits in the sweep |
|---|---|
| Terrify an orderly and cause him to flee | Any grab you deliberately let break; the escaped orderly still counts toward Challenge 6 |
| Grab and execute 3 orderlies with bare hands | The early yard and road kills, before you reach the environmental spots |
| Execute an orderly with the Telephone Pole | The pole beside the power box area — bring a live orderly with you |
| Throw an orderly to his death | The railing on the elevated pathway, or the ledge near the power box side |
| Complete the chapter without alerting any orderlies | Not compatible — run this on a separate, clean attempt |
Tip: do the three bare-hand executions first. If you spend every convenient target on plain kills later, you will end up walking the grounds looking for someone to drag into the pole or over the railing.
How to confirm Challenge 6 registered
Completion shows on screen as a challenge complete banner during the run, in the same format as “CHALLENGE 3 COMPLETE” and “CHALLENGE 4 COMPLETE.” The final confirmation appears on the Escape From Smith’s Grove results screen after you reach the wagon, alongside your score and killer rating.
The banner alone is not enough. Progress only saves when the chapter finishes, so leaving to the menu or restarting after the banner throws the work away.
Why the challenge does not complete
- You pried the gate open and left while orderlies were still active on the grounds.
- You restarted the chapter after the banner appeared instead of finishing the escape.
- An orderly you let go was chased down or blocked before he could get far enough away to count as escaped.
- You never went back toward the opening area, where the last stragglers can sit behind a gate Michael cannot pass through.
Restarting is only worth it while the challenge you are attempting is still recoverable. If the sweep went badly but the telephone pole and railing kills already registered, finish the chapter anyway and bank them — those objectives are saved the moment Michael reaches the wagon, and the grounds can be swept again on a replay.
