Workbench levels in Valheim are not earned by spending resources on the bench itself. They come from small upgrade structures parked next to it, and each one you add pushes the bench up a tier. Level 3 is the point where your flint gear and leather armor stop being stuck at low quality, which is why most players chase it before leaving the Meadows.

Quick answer: Build a Chopping Block (10 Wood, 10 Flint) and a Tanning Rack (10 Wood, 15 Flint, 20 Leather scraps, 5 Deer hide) within two meters of the same workbench, on separate sides so their connection lines do not cross. The bench reads level 3 once both are placed.

Workbench level 3 requirements

A workbench counts as level 1 on its own and climbs one step per attached upgrade, up to level 5. So level 3 means two upgrades are connected at the same time. The Chopping Block handles level 2, and the Tanning Rack is what takes you to level 3. Skipping the Chopping Block does not work, since duplicate upgrades never stack.

The bench also needs a roof and roughly 70 percent cover before it will craft or repair anything at all. Building and spawn suppression work without a roof, but the crafting menu will not open properly if the bench is standing in the rain.

Tanning Rack materials and where to farm them

Everything the Tanning Rack asks for is available in the Meadows, but the animal drops take the longest. Boars are the bottleneck here, not the flint.

MaterialAmountWhere to get it
Wood10Chop Beech trees, or grab loose branches, bushes, and stumps in the Meadows
Flint15Pale, oval stones along Meadows shorelines and river banks
Leather scraps20Killing Boars in the Meadows and Black Forest
Deer hide5Hunting Deer, best done with a Crude Bow or by sneaking up

Budget for 25 Flint total if you still need the Chopping Block, since that one eats 10 more. Boar runestones in the Meadows are worth checking, as the red stones can spawn a small group of Boars nearby and cut down the leather grind. Deer bolt the moment you get close, so ranged attacks or crouched approaches are the reliable options.

Build the Tanning Rack next to the workbench

Stand near your existing level 2 workbench with the Hammer equipped and open the build menu. The Tanning Rack appears in the crafting tab once you are in range of the bench.

Select the Tanning Rack and move the ghost preview to an open spot beside the bench, ideally on a different side than the Chopping Block. Watch for the glowing dotted line running from the preview to the workbench, which confirms the connection.

Place the structure. The rack builds instantly if you have all four materials, and the workbench level updates the moment it lands.

Placement rules that block the upgrade

Upgrades only register within two meters of the bench, and each one needs its own clear connection path. Line up the Chopping Block and Tanning Rack on the same side and the closer structure will cut off the other’s line, leaving you at level 2 with the materials spent.

Walls and floors do not break the link. If your hut is cramped, you can put an upgrade outside the wall or in a small basement directly under the bench and it still counts. Building a second Tanning Rack does nothing, though the same rack can serve more than one workbench if both are in range.

Confirm the workbench is level 3

Interact with the bench and check the star icon in the upper right corner of the crafting menu, which shows the current level. Switch to the upgrade tab and items that were capped before, like the Leather Helmet, Leather Tunic, Flint Spear, or Crude Bow, will now offer another quality step with their material cost listed.

If the star still reads 2, the usual culprit is distance or a blocked connection line. Re-enter the build menu, look for the dotted light between each upgrade and the bench, and move whichever structure has no line of its own.

What a level 3 workbench unlocks

The practical payoff is an extra upgrade tier across your early kit. Leather armor pieces, the Flint Axe, Flint Knife, Flint Spear, Club, and Wood Tower Shield all gain durability, and weapons and armor gain damage or armor rating with each step. The Tanning Rack also adds Obsidian Arrows to the recipe list, though those stay out of reach until you reach the Mountains for obsidian.

Every upgrade also widens the bench’s build radius by four meters on top of its base 20 meters, so a level 3 bench covers more ground for construction and keeps monster spawns suppressed across a larger area. Beyond this point the ladder continues with the Adze at level 4 and the Tool Shelf at level 5, both of which need metals from later biomes and a Forge nearby.
