Valheim: How to Get Guck in the Swamp Biome

Gucksacks only break to axes and pickaxes, and every Abomination drops three to four Guck on death.

Guck is the glowing green goo of the Swamp, and it is one of the few Valheim materials you cannot shoot, chop down, or farm from a spawner. It sits in fat sacks stuck to the sides of ancient trees, usually well above your head, and it also drops from the Swamp’s biggest bruiser. You need it for the Draugr Fang bow, so most players end up collecting a lot more than they expected.

Quick answer: Go to a Swamp, find an ancient tree with glowing green Gucksacks on its trunk, and hit the sacks with an axe or pickaxe at melee range. Bows and other ranged attacks do nothing. Abominations also drop 3 to 4 Guck every time they die.

Where Guck spawns in Valheim

Guck exists only in the Swamp biome. It comes from two places, Gucksacks and Abominations, and nothing else in the world produces it. Gucksacks look like large round green boils clinging to the trunks of the tall ancient trees that you cannot fell. They give off a soft green glow, which makes them easy to spot at night and in the Swamp’s permanent gloom.

Not every Swamp tree carries them. Expect only a handful of Guck trees per Swamp zone, with the bigger sacks clustered higher up the trunk. A single tall tree, stripped from bottom to top, can hand over 50 Guck or more.

How to harvest Gucksacks from Swamp trees

Pack a hammer, an axe or pickaxe, and roughly 50 to 70 wood before you set out. That is enough building material to reach most sacks on a single tree.
Clear the area around the tree first. Draugr and Leeches will interrupt you mid-swing, and anything attacking your scaffolding can drop you from height.
Place a workbench at the base of the trunk so you can build there. If the tree sits at the water’s edge, use a hoe and some stone to raise the ground first, otherwise harvested Guck sinks into deep water and is lost.
Build upward around the trunk. Floorboards work well as a spiral staircase, and regular stairs are steadier than ladders if you dislike falling. Wooden pieces attached to the tree hold up fine, so you do not need an elaborate support structure.
Swing your axe or pickaxe directly at each sack until it bursts. Every sack you break drops Guck at your feet, and you will see an “Added Guck” message when it lands in your inventory.

Tip: Guck is teleportable, so you can carry a full haul back through a portal instead of sailing it home.

Killing Abominations for guaranteed Guck drops

The Abomination is the walking tree-monster that pulls itself out of the Swamp mud. It is the only enemy that drops Guck, and the drop is guaranteed. Every Abomination, at any of its three levels, leaves behind 3 to 4 Guck along with Root.

Fire arrows are the efficient way to kill one. It is a slow, heavy attacker, so keep moving, punish the recovery on its swings, and fight it on open ground rather than in water where Leeches can join in.

Because Abominations only give a few Guck each, they are a supplement rather than a farm. If you need 10 Guck for a Draugr Fang plus spares for upgrades, climbing a tree is far faster than hunting monsters.

Why Gucksacks will not break

Almost every failed Guck run comes down to one of a few things. Work through these before assuming something is bugged.

ProblemWhat is happening
Arrows do no damageGucksacks ignore ranged attacks entirely. Only axes and pickaxes break them.
The tree will not fallAncient trees carrying Guck cannot be chopped down to knock the sacks loose.
Sacks are too highThere is no way to reach them without building. Bring wood and a workbench.
Guck disappears on dropIt fell into deep water. Raise the ground with a hoe before harvesting near the shoreline.
You keep fallingEnemies are breaking your scaffolding. Clear the area, or have a friend guard the base.

Leeches are the specific nuisance here. They lurk in the shallow water that surrounds most Guck trees and will chew on you while you are mid-swing, so check the water line before you commit to a climb.

The Draugr Fang is the reason most players make the trip. It is a strong late-game bow and the only weapon that requires Guck, and upgrading it eats more of the stuff, so budget accordingly.

The green torch is a decorative light source with no special properties, and it also burns Guck as refuel. Banners are cheaper and count toward your home’s comfort level, which makes them the better cosmetic spend. If you are still working toward a Draugr Fang, hold your Guck and light your base with resin instead.

One well-scaffolded tree usually solves the problem for good. Build the staircase once, strip every sack from root to crown, and you will walk away with enough Guck to craft the bow, max it out, and still have a stack left over for banners.
