It grows only in the new Dappled Forest, an autumn-themed biome full of red, orange, and yellow leaves, and it supplies a full set of wood blocks with a muted, gray-brown finish that reads as neutral against almost any build.
Quick answer: Head to a Dappled Forest, which generates on the edges of cold biomes. Poplar logs there craft into the full Poplar wood set, and Poplar saplings from leaves or a Wandering Trader grow into a random color variant.
Where Poplar Trees Grow
Poplar trees generate in exactly one place: the Dappled Forest biome. There is no other natural source of Poplar timber, so locating that biome is the whole task. The Dappled Forest is designed to sit on the transition between environments, appearing near colder regions rather than inside standard forests.
Check the outskirts of these areas when you explore:
- Plains and Sunflower Plains
- Cherry Grove
- Taiga and Snowy Taiga
- Ice Spikes and Frozen Peaks
- Cold Oceans
- Windswept Gravelly Hills
The biome is easy to spot once you are close. Bright orange grass and colorful canopies stand out clearly against green terrain, so scouting from the air with an Elytra makes the search far faster. Inside, you will also find fallen Poplar logs, red shrubs, leaf litter, brown mushrooms, and Abandoned Camp structures.
Abandoned Camps in the Dappled Forest use Poplar planks and logs in their frames, and their chests can hold spare wood, so they are worth raiding while you gather timber.
Getting Poplar Saplings and Growing a Tree
There are two ways to obtain a Poplar sapling. Breaking Poplar leaves drops them at a rate similar to other deciduous trees, which costs nothing. Alternatively, a Wandering Trader will hand over a Poplar sapling for 5 emeralds. The trader only stocks a few items at a time, so you may need to return before it appears.
The color mechanic is the key thing to understand. A single Poplar sapling type exists, and it does not lock to red, orange, or yellow. When it grows, it randomly selects one of the three leaf variants. One planting may turn out red, the next yellow, and the one after that orange.
Saplings can be planted on dirt, grass, coarse dirt, podzol, mycelium, rooted dirt, moss block, pale moss block, farmland, mud, or muddy mangrove roots, and they need an empty space above to grow. They require a light level of at least 9 in the sapling block to grow naturally. Bone meal forces an immediate growth attempt, though if the tree structure cannot fit, the attempt fails and the sapling stays put.
