Holy Light turns Rose’s defense into offense. Tapping it at the right moment performs a Light Parade, which cancels incoming damage and fires back a punishing counter-hit. The timing is tight, so getting the press and the window right is the whole skill.
Quick answer: Tap L2 (C on PC) a hair before a hit lands. A clean parry blocks the damage, staggers the attacker with a full-strength counter, and gives Rose 1 second of invulnerability.

When you unlock Holy Light

Holy Light unlocks only after you finish your first battle with Joan of Arc.
The tutorial introduces it with this text: “Holy Light. Hold down L2 to manifest a halo of light to disperse the Chaos Shard. Quickly press the button before being hit to perform a Light Parade that protects you from damage.” On PC, the key is C.
A follow-up prompt makes the defensive use plain: “Press L2 just before receiving an attack to block it.” (PC: C)

The parry is a quick tap of L2 (C on PC) just before the attack connects. Holding the button only manifests the halo, so do not hold it when you want to block.
The parry also covers hits that come from behind, not only hits from the front.
The parry window and timing
The parry’s active window begins about 0.07 seconds after input and lasts around 0.17 seconds. Aim to press just ahead of the impact.
A miss locks Holy Light for 1 second, which leaves Rose open during that time.
Rapidly pressing the button won’t help. On the ground, you must wait about a third of a second after one parry before starting another; in the air, that gap is about two thirds of a second.
Chaining parries through combos
A successful parry clears the 1-second cooldown, letting you parry the combo’s next hit right away. This makes it possible to deal with multi-hit attacks one strike at a time.
What a successful parry gives you
When Light Parade succeeds, Rose’s weapon hits the attacker at full strength and staggers them heavily.
After a parry, Rose receives 1 second of complete invulnerability. Use that opening to attack.
Relics that boost parries
| Relic | Effect on parry |
|---|---|

| Damage increases by 30% for 3 seconds following a parry |
Attacks you cannot parry
Some boss attacks ignore the Light Parade. Do not rely on a parry to stop these attacks.
- The Fallen: one close-range bash.
- Medusa: her petrifying eye beam and the beam barrage near the end.
- Death in the Transept: his touch strike, scythe reaps, and reaping chain are the attacks to expect. Inside the Catacombs, keep an eye out for the concluding reaping chain.
- Talos: his huge fist, hovering mines, and columns of fire that rise from the ground.
- Carmilla: the numbered blood mark at detonation.
- Dracula: fire pillars, an exploding blood blast, and his grab; in winged form, his life-drain grab and the exploding blood blast.
- The Succubus: her draining projectiles.
- Joan of Arc: the exploding fire pillars.
Isaac works in reverse: his attacks are parryable, but avoid striking him while he is holding a parry stance.
Striking Isaac while he holds his parry stance triggers a counter worth 500 damage. Wait for him to drop the stance before you attack.
Where to find both relics is in the relics list. For attacks a parry cannot stop, the slide may still work: see how dodging works. The beginner tips cover the rest of the basics.
