Enshrouded 1.0: How to Get String and Plant Fiber

Harvest Plant Fiber from regional bushes, then craft String by hand, at the Spinning Wheel, or from spiders.

String binds together a huge share of early and mid-game crafting in Enshrouded, and it all starts with Plant Fiber. You gather Plant Fiber from the plants dotted across every region, then turn it into String by hand or at a workstation. Spiders hand it over too.

Quick answer: Collect Plant Fiber from bushes and low plants, then open Crafting and build String under Resources. By hand it costs 3 Plant Fiber for 1 String.

Where to collect Plant Fiber in each region

Plant Fiber is everywhere. Walk up to a bush or a low plant and use the interact prompt, which reads “Collect” or “Harvest”, to pick it. Its item text describes it plainly: “Maybe they can be used as strings? They seem to be pretty robust.”

The plants that yield it change from region to region, so here is what to look for as you travel:

RegionPlants that give Plant Fiber
SpringlandsGreen leafy bushes, ferns and dried-up plants around the Plains
RevelwoodBlackberry shrubs and oversized ferns growing beneath the trees
Nomad HighlandsThe low steppe bushes, including the leafless ones
KindlewastesThe dry desert shrubs
Albaneve SummitsHeather, juniper and alpine rose bushes
BlackmireThe red moss hanging on the tall trees
Veilwater BasinMarsh shrubs alongside broad Monstera foliage
Cinder’s CradleThyme and bean plants

In the Springlands, small twig bundles on the ground also give 2-4 Plant Fiber along with Twigs. If you want to pin locations before heading out, the interactive map covers each region.

It is the fiber you feed the Beehive, at 3 per Wax, and it feeds into the Farmer’s recipes as well.

Craft String by hand from Plant Fiber

The recipe unlocks the moment you pick up your first Plant Fiber, so you can make String with no workstation at all. Its item text sums up why it matters: “Used to bind things together, String is an extremely important item.”

Open the Crafting menu and go to the Resources category. String sits there at item level 5.
Select String. By hand the recipe is 3 Plant Fiber for 1 String. Paper Reed works in place of Plant Fiber if you have it.

Confirm the craft. The finished String lands in your inventory, ready to spend on recipes that need it.

Cheaper String from the Spinning Wheel and Spinning Machine

Two workstations improve on the hand recipe once you progress. The Spinning Wheel drops the cost, and the Spinning Machine converts fiber in bulk.

  • Spinning Wheel — 2 Plant Fiber (or Paper Reed) for 1 String. Crafted at the Hunter using 2 Wood Logs, 2 Wood Planks, 3 Fossilized Bone, 2 Bronze Bars and 5 Nails, after you know the Loom.
  • Spinning Machine — Turn 10 Plant Fiber (or Paper Reed) into 10 String. You gain access to it after rescuing the Huntress and finding Raw Wool.

String drops from spiders

You can also skip crafting and take String straight off enemies. Spiders drop it on every kill, with bigger ones giving more.

The Summit spiders in the Albaneve Summits drop the same amounts as their lowland counterparts.

What String is used for

String appears in 228 recipes, so keeping a steady supply pays off. The first large demand comes from the Workbench, which needs 3 String and 8 Wood Logs to hand-craft. A few other common recipes:

  • Axe, Pickaxe, Bow and Staff — 1 String each (hand crafting).
  • Bandage — 1 Torn Cloth and 1 String.
  • Tiny Backpack — 3 Torn Cloth and 5 String.
  • Small Chest (Workbench) — 3 String.
  • At a Workbench, craft a Grappling Hook with 4 Metal Scraps, 7 String and 10 Shroud Spores.
  • At a Workbench, use 8 Shroud Wood, 2 Animal Fur, 2 String and 2 Shroud Spores to craft a Glider.
