Tar is a crafted material in Enshrouded, made from logs and Dirt rather than looted. You produce it at the Charcoal Kiln, and once a batch is running you can walk away while the station keeps working. In the game, the item reads: “Not very pretty, but useful when it comes to creating protection from the elements.”

Quick answer: Put 24 Wood Logs and 6 Dirt into the Charcoal Kiln, select Tar, and wait 5 minutes for 20 Tar per batch.

Craft Tar in the Charcoal Kiln

The Charcoal Kiln turns raw logs and Dirt into Tar. Any log type works, including Wood Logs, Hardwood, and Palm Wood Logs, and any regional Dirt works too, such as Springlands Dirt, Revelwood Dirt, and Blackmire Dirt.

Set up a Charcoal Kiln at your base. It produces Charcoal, Wood Acid, and Tar, so a single kiln can make all three.
Chop trees to collect 24 logs, then use a pickaxe to dig up 6 Dirt.
Open the kiln and choose Tar from its Available Outputs. The menu lists Charcoal, Wood Acid, and Tar, so make sure Tar is the selected recipe before you load materials.

Load the inputs with 24 logs and 6 Dirt. One batch yields 20 Tar after 5 minutes. Stock the kiln for multiple batches, and it will keep producing while you are away.

When the timer finishes, take the Tar from the kiln’s output slot.

Get Tar from overcooked campfire food

A modest extra source is overcooked grilled food. Leave a dish on a campfire beyond the end of cooking, and it turns into 1 Tar. This works for several dishes:

  • Grilled Bird Meat, Grilled Game, and Grilled Crab Meat
  • Grilled Fatty Meat and Grilled Dune Armadillo
  • Grilled Yucca Fruit and Roasted Azure Russula
  • The meat skewers and the grilled fish

Overcooking food wastes the meal to produce a single Tar, so lean on the kiln whenever you need Tar in quantity.

What Tar is used for

Tar feeds into crafting, alchemy, building, and weapon upgrades. One early priority is the Tanning Station, which you build at the Hunter and need before you can make Leather.

At the Laboratory, Flammable Goo and Mauveine each take 5 Tar. The Blacksmith uses it to craft weapons as well: the Wailing Blade costs 2 to 7 Tar depending on tier, and the Dragon Sword costs 2 to 8 by tier.
