Quick answer: Use a Felling Axe to chop a Shroud Root and gain skill points. The tables below organize all 56 roots and 21 wells by region.
How Shroud Roots and Elixir Wells work in Enshrouded
These rules decide how many points one character can collect.
A Shroud Root is destroyed with a Felling Axe and grants skill points.
Every Flameborn nearby gets the points when the root falls, so co-op partners standing close also earn them.
A root counts once per character. It respawns later, but you get no more points from it.
Every Elixir Well lies within the Shroud, with a Shroud Root at its lowest point.
Ancient Spires reveal Elixir Wells and Flame Sanctums on your map.
Ancient Obelisks point to concealed Shroud Roots and Flame Shrines.
The game explains the system in its own words:
“The Shroud springs forth from Elixir Wells throughout Embervale. Fell the Shroud Root at their depths to receive skillpoints for all nearby Flameborn. Flameborn who have harvested a Shroud Root once cannot gain additional skill points from the same root after it respawns. Elixir Wells are always enshrouded and challenging. Prepare yourself accordingly.”
The two kinds of landmarks that put these spots on your map have their own descriptions:
“Ancient Obelisks contain lore about the world. After reading them, you will gain insight to the locations of hidden Flame Shrines and Shroud Roots.”
“Scale Ancient Spires and speak to the Flame atop to reveal important landmarks on your map. Ancient Spires unveil the location of Elixir Wells and Flame Sanctums.”
If you are heading into an Elixir Well, enter with a full Shroud timer, because the whole well is in the Shroud. Work your way down to the bottom. The root is in the last chamber.
Inside an Elixir Well: the Location reached banner for Enter The Elixir Well, with the Shroud timer running.
Walk up to the root. The game charts it on your map and shows a prompt that reads “The Shroud Root is the source of our misery. Destroy it with a felling axe and prosper.”
Open the Skills menu (see the new 1.0 combat skills) and spend the points you earned.

All 21 Elixir Well locations
Elixir Wells are found in six regions. Blackmire and Cinder’s Cradle have none. Most wells appear on the map simply as Elixir Well, but two have their own names: Ring of Rot in the Springlands and The Grim in the Kindlewastes. As with the roots, each list runs from north to south.
