Enshrouded: How to Cook Food Over a Fire (Making A Home Quest)

Turn Raw Wolf Meat into Grilled Wolf Meat at your Fireplace, then eat it to finish Making A Home.

Turn Raw Wolf Meat into Grilled Wolf Meat at your Fireplace, then eat it to finish Making A Home.

Making A Home starts right after the Flame Altar And Base Improvements quest, once you strengthen the Flame to Level 2. It has two objectives. First comes “Cook Something Over A Fire”, then “Eat The Processed Food”.

Quick answer: Put raw meat on your action bar, press E Cook at a lit Fireplace, select the meat, hold the left mouse button until “Release to finish” shows, let go, then left-click the grilled meat to eat it.

Raw meat for Making A Home

Our raw meat came from a wolf. We killed one in a small cave just south of our first base, and its loot window held Bones and Raw Wolf Meat; F Take All picked up both. Not every wolf gave us meat: one we killed earlier near the base dropped only Bones.

Raw meat needs cooking before it can be eaten. The description for Raw Lean Meat, another raw meat, says “Inedible, raw meat. Must be cooked over a campfire.” Raw Wolf Meat is the meat we cooked in the steps below.

How to cook Raw Wolf Meat at the Fireplace

Cook at the stone Fireplace you built during the Building Shelter quest. A campfire shows the same E Cook prompt; we used one earlier at the Longkeep camp, as covered in our guide to fixing low health with food and cooking. Make sure the raw meat sits on an action bar before you start.

Approach the lit Fireplace. You’ll see the prompt “E Cook”; in the upper-right corner, the quest tracker displays MAKING A HOME / Cook Something Over A Fire.

Press E to sit down by the fire. The Rested list in the top left ticks Sitting, Warmth and Comfort (Level 1). The same seat is how you get the Rested buff at a campfire.

Press ALT+F1 if you want to see the tutorial card. It reads “Place food in your action bar, select it, and press [LMB] to cook.” If your meat is on the ALT action bar, press ALT to switch to it.

Choose the slot containing the meat. Above the bar, a mouse icon appears alongside “Raw Wolf Meat” and the prompt “Hold to cook”.

Hold the left mouse button and keep holding. When the prompt changes to “Release to finish”, let go.

Don’t let go early. On our first try we released before “Release to finish” showed, and the meat simply went back onto the action bar, still raw. A second, longer hold reached “Release to finish” and cooked it.

Once the cooking succeeds, a pickup line for “Grilled Wolf Meat” appears on the left, followed by “QUEST UPDATED – Making A Home”. The tracker changes to “Eat The Processed Food”, and Grilled Wolf Meat replaces the raw meat on the action bar.

Eat The Processed Food to complete Making A Home

You don’t have to stay seated for this part. Stand up and walk away if you like, then select the Grilled Wolf Meat’s slot on the action bar.

Press the left mouse button to eat it. The banner “QUEST COMPLETED! Making A Home” appears with “Quest reward XP +150,” and “Maximum health increased.” shows in the middle of the screen. Your tracker then moves to A Story of Fire with the objective “Discover The Flame Obelisk”, and a new marker appears on the compass.
