Ghost Ambush & Window Breach

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 spends years of rebooted-series goodwill on one scene. You play as Captain John Price, now operating outside any chain of command, and you fight the two men he brought into Task Force 141. First Simon “Ghost” Riley, then Kyle “Gaz” Garrick, high above a blacked-out Mumbai. It is a scripted, first-person boss sequence built mostly on melee, and it ends in a way that neither side planned for.

Quick answer: Price beats Ghost in a rooftop knife duel and then beats Gaz hand to hand. A sniper drops Ghost during the final standoff, and Valeria Garza’s cartel takes both 141 operators prisoner.

The rest of the page covers story events from late in the campaign.

Why Ghost and Price are fighting in Modern Warfare 4

Price killed General Shepherd after the events of Modern Warfare III. Task Force 141 was disbanded, and Price went rogue. He hunts down and kills Makarov in New York, then forms an uneasy partnership with cartel leader Valeria Garza to find the man behind Makarov, known only as Archer. Ghost and Gaz are still taking orders, and their orders are to stop him.

The fight takes place at the end of a Mumbai operation. Price and Valeria are ambushed in a convoy, escape through alleys and across tin rooftops, and hand off a weapon cylinder that Valeria uses to trigger an EMP. The blast cuts power to the city and brings down a helicopter. Gaz and Ghost then fast-rope onto a high-rise. The game puts you in Gaz’s boots as he clears the tower floor by floor with night and thermal vision, while Price talks to him over the radio about duty and morality. Control switches to Price once the squad reaches the penthouse.

The penthouse hunt and Ghost’s ambush

The sequence opens on comms. Gaz reports that 0-6 is in position, Ghost tells Price it’s his “Last chance,” and Price answers with “Stand down, Simon.” Ghost’s reply is a single word: “Never.”

What follows is a slow, tense stretch. Price moves through an unfinished floor hung with plastic sheeting, carrying an assault rifle with a 45-round magazine and 150 in reserve. Ghost is never quite visible. He taunts Price over the radio (“You’re on the wrong side now, mate”), and Price shouts back, daring him to come out. A checkpoint triggers partway through the search.

Ghost hits Price from behind next to a window. The game switches to quick-time melee here and teaches its defensive rhythm. You block just before a hit lands to parry, then counter. Pull it off and both men crash through the glass onto an exterior platform on the side of the tower.

The knife duel on the glass rooftop

Out on the glass, Price makes one more attempt at talking. “You know who I am… Trust me,” he says. Ghost replies, “We’re past all that,” pulls a combat knife, and tells Price to get up. It’s the last moment either of them tries to back away from the fight.

The duel uses a dedicated knife-fighting system rather than generic melee. Price trades directional slashes with Ghost, parries incoming strikes, gets locked blade to blade, and finishes exchanges with takedowns. The on-screen prompts use controller labels:

Most of the dialogue lands mid-fight. Price insists he’s “only here for the Archer”; Ghost says he’s there for Price. At one point Ghost pins Price under a blade and says simply, “I have orders.” Price’s answer, that Ghost will follow them “Blindly,” is the clearest statement of what the whole campaign is arguing about. Price then throws Ghost off, and a second checkpoint begins the next phase of the duel.

The duel ends when Price tackles Ghost back through the glass into the suite, pins him to the floor, takes his knife, and keeps punching until Ghost stops moving. Price wins, though he is visibly bruised and bloodied by this point.

Gaz joins the fight

Gaz arrives with his weapon raised, tells “John” to stay down, and checks on Ghost. That opening is enough for Price. He pulls the pin on a grenade (the X prompt), blinds Gaz with the flash, and rushes him. The brawl that follows is plain fistfighting. It moves through the suite and down to a flooded lounge beside an indoor pool. Ghost gets back into it, so for a stretch Price is effectively fighting both men.

It ends in a three-way standoff. Price has Gaz in a chokehold as a human shield, and a recovering Ghost has a rifle trained on them. “You gonna kill us both, Simon?” Price asks. “Just you,” Ghost says. Gaz tells him to take the shot.

Valeria Garza ends the standoff

Ghost never fires. A sniper round takes him down, and Valeria’s cartel fighters pour into the suite and restrain both 141 operators. Price is not pleased: “This wasn’t part of the deal.” Valeria replies that the prisoners are compensation for using the weapon. When Gaz asks where the rest of his team is, she tells him there are no others. While he’s being dragged off, Gaz delivers the scene’s parting line to Price, telling him he’s broken.

The scene ends with Price and Valeria alone. Valeria says Archer is inbound, reminds Price that she gets paid first, and confirms she has the rooftop covered. Price warns that Archer won’t come alone. Their parting lines, “Let’s make this look real” and “Just keep it loose,” make clear that Price’s capture at the handoff is meant to be staged.

It doesn’t go to plan. Archer’s helicopter lands on the helipad, he inspects the EMP canister, and his snipers open fire, cutting down the cartel and shooting Valeria before Price, still restrained, is hauled aboard. The Ghost fight is the last time the old 141 shares a room before the campaign heads to its final mission on a frozen lake. Modern Warfare 4 fully launches on October 23, 2026.
