Quick answer: Phantom Edges spend Remnant Spark when used, and resting at any bell refills it. Mid-fight refills come from Endless Renewal · Lv. 2, the Remnant Spark Cage and Acolyte Whisk accessories, and the Iron Gauntlets’ Fist Guard parry.

What Remnant Spark is in Phantom Blade Zero

Remnant Spark powers Phantom Edges, which are distinct from your main weapons. Open Character > Equip to see the PHANTOM EDGES column, positioned between MAIN WEAPONS and MEDICINES. There are two slots in each of the three columns. The game tells you to “Equip two Phantom Edges and use [Change Sha-Chi Weapon] to switch between them.”

On PC, you fire the equipped Phantom Edge with Left Ctrl. Look at the bottom-right corner of the HUD. The Phantom Edge sits in its own diamond with “Ctrl” beneath it, and next to it is a red spiral icon with a number. That number is your current Remnant Spark. When it hits zero, the game shows “Out of Remnant Spark”.

Each Phantom Edge lists its cost on its card. The Dread Axe, which you get for defeating Peng Meng, the Axemaster, reads: “Hold [key] to charge the attack, up to 2 stages. Release [key] to unleash a crushing cleave. Higher charge stages deal more damage. Consumes 1 [Remnant Spark icon].”

How to restore Remnant Spark

Bells are the only refill you get from the start, and they always work. Every other method has to be unlocked through an ability, an accessory or a Phantom Edge art, and most of them work on a chance rather than every time.

Every way to refill or raise your Remnant Spark besides bells:

Rest at a bell

Touching one also tops up your health and healing items, because “Touch the Bell to restore HP and Medicine.”

Endless Renewal · Lv. 2 (ability)

This ability reads: “[Execute] Executions have a chance to restore Remnant Spark.” It costs 20,000 Remnant Dust and requires 1 Sha-Chi Amber. If you don’t have the Amber, the training screen shows “Requires 1 Sha-Chi Amber” and “TRAINING REQUIREMENTS NOT MET”.

It comes after Endless Renewal · Lv. 1, which reads “Assassinations and Executions restore HP and Sha-Chi” and needs 1 Blackstone.

Remnant Spark Cage (accessory)

“Triggering a Phantom Edge follow-up attack has a 33% chance to restore 1 Remnant Spark.” Refining the Cage raises that chance to 66% for 12,480 Remnant Dust, then to 100% for 18,720 Remnant Dust. The Cage is in a chest in Village of Lu, and the nearest bell is Smuggler’s Treasure Cellar.

Acolyte Whisk (accessory)

“Inflicting Fire, Ice, Lightning, or Poison effects on enemies builds a small amount of Elemental Energy. When fully charged, restores 1 Remnant Spark.” Refining changes “small” to “moderate” for 52,800 Remnant Dust, then to “great” for 79,200 Remnant Dust. You find the Whisk in Meigu Lake.

Iron Gauntlets: Fist Guard (Phantom Edge art)

Fist Guard unlocks at Iron Gauntlets weapon level 15: “Press [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to consume 1 Remnant Spark and block with the Iron Gauntlets. Parrying an enemy attack just before it lands restores 1 Remnant Spark and grants Fist Focus. If Fist Focus is already full, its duration is extended by 2 seconds.” The Iron Gauntlets are in Crimson Forest, and the nearest bell is Mirrorwood Entrance.

Temporary Remnant Spark from Heavy Attacks

Two accessories build a separate pool of temporary Remnant Spark when you land Heavy Attacks. Each one only applies to one type of Phantom Edge, and that type spends the temporary Spark before it touches your normal supply.

Formless Divine Mirror iconFormless Divine MirrorRanged-type+5% damage (14,400), then +10% (21,600)Chest in Pangzhen, bell: Back Hill Pavilion

The Crude Radiant Heart continues with “Martial-type Phantom Edges consume temporary Remnant Spark first,” and the Formless Divine Mirror continues with “Ranged-type Phantom Edges consume temporary Remnant Spark first.” Refine costs are in Remnant Dust, and the damage bonus applies to Phantom Edges of the matching type.

Raising maximum Remnant Spark and spending less

Two levels of Still Depths each add one to your cap. Lv. 1 costs 30,000 Remnant Dust, and Lv. 2 costs 60,000.

Several abilities and items reduce how much each use costs:

  • Shadowless Form (ability, 80,000 Remnant Dust): “Using a Phantom Edge has a 15% chance to not consume Remnant Spark.”
  • Flowing Chi (ability, 10,000 Remnant Dust, second node of the middle branch of the training tree): “When a regular enemy uses a ranged Red-flash Attack, or has less than 50% HP while Guard-Broken, certain Phantom Edges can be used at the right moment to counter or perform a follow-up attack without consuming Remnant Spark.”
  • Nuo Mask (accessory, Mirage Estate, bell: Nuo Mask Altar): “Reduces the Remnant Spark cost of Summon-type Phantom Edges by 1. Summons gain Berserk, slightly increasing their damage while active.”

Some Phantom Edge arts skip the cost entirely once the weapon reaches the listed level:

  • Bashpole, Follow-Through (Lv. 25): “As a Bashpole attack ends, press [Phantom Edges] to follow up with another slam without consuming Remnant Spark”
  • Wolfjaw, Full-Power Strike (Lv. 15): “Press [Phantom Edges] at the end of a Wolfjaw attack to unleash Full-Power Strike straight ahead without consuming Remnant Spark”
  • Hunter’s Chain Sickle, Chain-Sickle Traverse (Lv. 15): “Press [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to hurl the Chain Sickle at the ground or a wall and vault toward the target point. Consumes no Remnant Spark outside combat.”
  • Iron Gauntlets, Fury Unleashed (Lv. 25): “While in the full Fist Focus state, consume the state to make the next combo consume no Remnant Spark.”
  • Flying Guillotine, Blood-Wheel Flight (Lv. 15): “At the end of a combo, press [Phantom Edges] to hurl the Flying Guillotine forward at high speed. Does not consume additional Remnant Spark”

What drains Remnant Spark faster

Some arts and one accessory trade extra Remnant Spark for more damage, so watch the counter when you use them:

  • Dread Axe, Full-Power Charge (Lv. 5): “Double-tap [Phantom Edges] to consume 1 additional Remnant Spark and immediately perform a fully charged strike.”
  • Tiger Cannon, Full Blast: “Press [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to launch Tiger Cannon itself forward, dealing massive damage. Consumes 2 Remnant Spark”
  • Guardian Idol (accessory, Mandate Encampment, bell: Training Grounds Depths): “Destruction-type Phantom Edges consume 1 additional Remnant Spark and deal 75% more damage.”

Held arts drain Spark for as long as you hold the input. The One-eyed Bow’s Death Gaze (Lv. 15) reads “Hold [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to continuously fire [Death Ray]. Consumes Remnant Spark over time.” The Heartrend Pipa’s Formation-Breaking Song (Lv. 25) reads “Hold [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to sit and continuously play the pipa, unleashing a barrage of Blue and Red Sonic Blades. Continuously consumes Remnant Spark”.

Phantom Edge uses outside combat

Some Phantom Edges also open up the map, and these exploration uses work even when the weapon isn’t equipped. You only need to own it.

  • Dread Axe: cuts massive chains
  • Hunter’s Chain Sickle: latches onto special anchor points and pulls Soul up
  • Bashpole: smashes weakened floors
  • Illusory Pipa: dispels Illusion Barriers
  • You Loong’s Deluge: extinguishes burning flame barriers
  • Tiger Cannon: blasts through stone walls
  • Flaming Mane: burns bramble barriers

On the area map, a red marker crossed out identifies a location that requires a Phantom Edge you have not obtained. Hover on the marker to see the missing type, such as “Missing: Ranged-type Phantom Edge”.
