Soul wading toward the Great Waterfall where The Hunt waits in Phantom Blade Zero

Quick answer: Defeat The Hunt at the Great Waterfall in Weeping Creek Valley. The Hunter’s Chain Sickle Phantom Edge is your reward for winning both phases of the fight.

In Phantom Blade Zero, the Hunter’s Chain Sickle is a Phantom Edge for medium- and long-range attacks. Finding it also gives you a traversal skill usable from your inventory, making it worth collecting even if you don’t intend to use it in combat. Every other Phantom Edge is in the full weapons list.

Where to find The Hunt’s second fight

The prologue is your first encounter with The Hunt, following the Zuo Shang duel and cart chase (The Hunt’s first fight). You face him again at the base of the Great Waterfall in Weeping Creek Valley; that rematch rewards the Chain Sickle. The map places the Great Waterfall north of the Waterfall Bridge bell.

Make your way to the Great Waterfall bell. Look for a red-cloth cross on a bank of planks and grass, facing the waterfall pool. The bell is included in the full list of bells.
Stay beside the pool’s southern shore. The drop directly in front of the bell leads to a lower stream and is fatal, so avoid going over the edge there.
Head west across the pool, wading in the direction of the waterfall.
Continue to the waterfall’s base. A cutscene begins, showing The Hunt on the ledge above as he says “Master Soul…will never escape!…”

After you die, The Hunt remains hostile when you return. He may attack you before you get as far as the pool.

The Hunt’s two phases

You need to beat two phases back to back before the Chain Sickle drops.

  • Phase 1, “The Hunt, Hunter of the Order”: He fights with chain sickles, mixing close sickle strikes with long chain lashes. He can hook you and drag you in.
  • Phase 2, “The Hunt, Sixfold Scythe”: This phase opens with a cutscene. The archive entry describes it like this: “two steel arms unfold from the Hunt’s back and grasp another pair of gleaming chain sickles. His four arms strike in turn or send all four scythes flying at once”.

Clearing both phases pays out 20,000 Remnant Dust. Health figures for The Hunt and every other boss are in the full boss list.

Hunter’s Chain Sickle reward card and stats

When the second phase falls, the reward card appears. This is your confirmation that the Chain Sickle is yours. It lists the weapon as “Martial” and “HUNTER’S CHAIN SICKLE” at level 1, with these starting stats:

StatLevel 1 value
Damage247
Guard Break213

The card describes the weapon as follows: “Coiling, pulling, reaping. As precise as an extension of its master’s arm. It strikes from mid- to long-range and can grapple onto distant anchor points for traversal.”

Its attack instructions read: “Press Ctrl repeatedly to perform up to 3 mid-to-long-range slashing combo. The sickle blade deals the most damage, while the chain deals only 30% of the blade’s damage. A full combo consumes 1” Remnant Spark, shown as a red spiral icon. More on that resource is in the Remnant Spark explainer.

The lore line is short: “A pair of chained sickles once wielded by the Hunt.”

The card closes by asking “Equip the new Phantom Edge now?” Press Space to confirm, or Esc to go back. Going back keeps your current Phantom Edge equipped, and the Chain Sickle still lands in your inventory either way.

Grappling Traverse works without equipping the Chain Sickle

The reward card also lists the field ability: “Grappling Traverse: Once obtained, the Hunter’s Chain Sickle can grapple onto distant anchor points for traversal, even when not equipped.”

Next, the “Hunter’s Chain Sickle Exploration Ability” tutorial appears. It states: “The Hunter’s Chain Sickle can latch onto special anchor points and pull Soul up even when not equipped.” In the clip, Soul swings to a branch on the far side of a cliff gap.

That means you can keep a different Phantom Edge equipped and still use the grapple. The Dread Axe’s chain breaking works the same way from your inventory.

How to use Grappling Traverse

Grappling Traverse relies on anchor points, so check above you first. In Weeping Creek Valley, go past the climb behind the Great Waterfall; the first anchor sits high on a cliff near a roadside shrine with red candles. From far away, it appears as a small white circle. Move within range, and the point displays an “L Ctrl” prompt.

Left Ctrl starts the grapple: Soul sends a chain toward the anchor and rises through the air to the ledge above, about 11 metres higher. The Hunter’s Chain Sickle doesn’t need to be equipped; the grapple still works with the Dread Axe selected as your Phantom Edge. For directions to the first anchor point, use the full grapple guide.

Equipping and switching Phantom Edges

Once the tutorial closes, an on-screen hint appears: “Equip two Phantom Edges and use 2 to switch between them.” Phantom Edge attacks go on Ctrl and spend Remnant Spark, so the Chain Sickle can sit in your second slot alongside whatever you already use.

Hunter’s Chain Sickle arts and unlock levels

Grappling Traverse is active as soon as you pick the weapon up. The other arts unlock as you raise the Chain Sickle’s weapon level with Upgrade Equipment, found at the Forge or a bell under the Phantom Edges tab (how to upgrade weapons).

Each art’s in-game description reads as follows:

  • Shadow Bound: “Follow up a combo with [Heavy Attack] or [Light Attack] to pull the locked-on enemy toward Soul. If the target has Super Armor or is a large enemy, Soul is pulled toward the target instead. Consumes no additional Remnant Spark”
  • Relentless Pursuit: “Lv. 1: Slightly increases Chain Sickle damage against enemies that are Burning, Frozen, Paralyzed, Poisoned, or Bleeding. Lv. 2: Moderately increases Chain Sickle damage against enemies that are Burning, Frozen, Paralyzed, Poisoned, or Bleeding. Lv. 3: Greatly increases Chain Sickle damage against enemies that are Burning, Frozen, Paralyzed, Poisoned, or Bleeding.”
  • Chain-Sickle Traverse: “Press [Block]+[Phantom Edges] to hurl the Chain Sickle at the ground or a wall and vault toward the target point. Consumes no Remnant Spark outside combat.”
  • Deathchase Cyclone: “At the end of a combo, press [Phantom Edges] to whirl the Chain Sickle, creating a cyclone that continuously damages enemies caught within it.”

Soul Tempering the Chain Sickle: Gleaming Hook

The Chain Sickle’s Soul Tempering refine art is Gleaming Hook: “The chain’s power is increased, allowing it to deal the same damage as the sickle blade. When the sickle blade hits an enemy, it depletes more Sha-Chi and builds the enemy’s Bleed Gauge. When the gauge is full, it triggers Blood Loss. Has no effect on Puppets, Golden Bodies, or Phantom Bodies.”

To unlock it, you need the Alloyed Scythe Blade, described in-game as “Used to Soul Temper the Hunter’s Chain Sickle.” It turns up in Meigu Lake, a later region, so Gleaming Hook has to wait until you get there.
