Quick answer: Whence the Weeping is a Story quest whose first objective is “Find the source of the weeping”. Open Quests > Story to see it. Its marker sits on the Weeping Creek Valley label of the map.

What Whence the Weeping is

“WHENCE THE WEEPING” is a Story quest in Phantom Blade Zero. It sits in the same list as the main quests, not with the Tales and side quests. Its row carries the subtitle “A whisper on the wind, an old name carried by the breeze”. On screen that line gets cut off after “carried by th…”.

By the close of the opening chapter, Against the Flow, in Weeping Creek Valley, this quest is already listed under Story. It remains available in Crimson Forest, where the Story entries appear in this sequence:

  • “ILLUSION OF INANIS” (tracked)
  • “AGAINST THE FLOW”
  • “PILLARS OF KUNLUN”
  • “WHENCE THE WEEPING”
  • “STEEL AND STEAM” (completed)
  • “DEEP IN THE VALLEY” (completed)

The weeping itself is something Soul hears. In Weeping Creek Valley, the village girl Yu’er has three dialogue options: “Ask about the Main Road”, “Ask about the Woman’s Weeping” and “Ask How to Save Her Father”. If you pick the weeping question, Soul asks her whether she has heard a woman crying. She hasn’t. Soul decides that he is the only one who can hear it, and that it is a message reaching him through the Discordance.

The matter surfaces once more in Crimson Forest. At its first bell, a Crane Bell, Soul explains to Inanis that hearing the weeping brought him to that location.

How to open the Whence the Weeping quest

Press Esc to bring up the menu. Along its upper edge, the tabs are MAP, followed by QUESTS, then CHARACTER, ITEMS, ARCHIVES and SYSTEM. Press Q or E to switch over to QUESTS.
On entering Quests, you’ll find the “Story” list selected and the cursor positioned on the quest you’re tracking. Use Z or C to cycle through the three lists; for this, leave Story selected.
Move down with the Down arrow until the highlight reaches “WHENCE THE WEEPING”. Beneath its name, you’ll see the subtitle. On PC, hovering over an entry with the mouse makes its text bold, but doesn’t move the keyboard cursor.

Press Space (“Select” in the footer) to bring up the quest detail pane.

The correct quest is open when the lower-left pane names it “WHENCE THE WEEPING” and gives the objective as “Find the source of the weeping”. Meanwhile, the map at the right changes to WEEPING CREEK VALLEY.

Where the Whence the Weeping marker points

Look for a diamond enclosed by a ring in the map’s lower-right corner. It overlays the “WEEPING CREEK VALLEY” label, indicating the region rather than an individual location.

The quest sends you back to Weeping Creek Valley, the region from chapter one and the location of the first bell, “The Beginning”. From any other bell, use Traverse to reach a bell you’ve already rung there.

Can you track Whence the Weeping?

No. With Whence the Weeping open, the footer shows only “Back”, and there is no Track button. A trackable quest looks different. Opening ILLUSION OF INANIS shows the objective “Search for the illusion of Inanis”, with “Untrack” and “Back” in the footer.
