Quick answer: The marker is a hanging object you can only reach by shooting it down. Owning any ranged-type Phantom Edge (Goldblaze, Feather Bow, Flying Dagger or One-eyed Bow) is enough, even unequipped.
Where the Missing: Ranged-type Phantom Edge tooltip shows
On the region map in Phantom Blade Zero, some red markers sit next to bells. In Pangzhen, one of them is right beside the Pond of Fading Song bell in the backstreet. Hover over it and you get a two-line tooltip that reads “Missing:” over “Ranged-type Phantom Edge”. Other markers can carry the same tooltip.

The wording depends on your inventory. While you own no ranged-type Phantom Edge, the first line says “Missing:”. Once you own one, the same tooltip changes to “Can use:” over “Ranged-type Phantom Edge”. That switch is how you confirm you are ready to go back.

Every ranged-type Phantom Edge has a field ability called Ranged Shot. Its description reads:
Once obtained, it can shoot down certain hanging objects at medium to long range, even when not equipped.
The tutorial for bows says the same: “The Bow can shoot down hidden objects in high places even when not equipped.” So the red marker is a hanging object, and you clear it by returning with any one ranged-type Phantom Edge in your inventory. It does not have to sit in a Phantom Edge slot.
Phantom Edges have different field abilities for dealing with obstacles. Flaming Mane, for instance, sets brambles alight. A ranged-type Edge is what you need to bring down objects suspended overhead.
The Pond of Fading Song hanging gift
In Pangzhen’s backstreet, the marker near the Pond of Fading Song bell points to a hanging gift roughly 45 metres away, positioned slightly below the lake shore. Neither of the two chests near this bell contains a Phantom Edge, so the tooltip remains “Missing:” until you arrive carrying a ranged one.
Shoot the gift down and it drops a Refined Indigo Crystal. Its card reads:
A pure indigo crystal refined time and again to remove impurities. Ground into a fine, translucent powder, it reveals an accessory’s natural brilliance without excessive embellishment, making it highly prized throughout the Wulin.

All four ranged-type Phantom Edges
Any one of these turns the tooltip to “Can use:”. Feather Bow comes earliest by region, since Weeping Creek Valley comes first.
