The prologue of Assassin’s Creed Black Flag Resynced is named after the pirate you play as, Edward Kenway, and it doubles as the game’s core tutorial. It moves from a naval fight to a foot chase, a duel with the rogue Assassin Duncan Walpole, and finally a short voyage toward Havana. Every combat, parkour, and sailing basic is introduced here, so working through it cleanly sets you up for the rest of the campaign.
Quick answer: Sink Walpole’s four ships, chase him across Cape Bonavista, kill him in a sword duel, take his robes, rescue Stede Bonnet from soldiers, then sail his ship out of the bay toward Havana until the closing cutscene triggers the title drop.
Win the opening naval battle
You start mid-cutscene during a sea fight. A cannon blast knocks Edward down, he pulls shrapnel from his arm, and Duncan Walpole appears in full Assassin gear. Control returns once the scene ends.

Once the last ship goes down, a cutscene takes over. Your own gunpowder barrels catch fire and begin exploding, Duncan boards and kills your captain, and the blast throws both men into the sea before either can act.

After a brief flashback with Edward’s wife Caroline, who makes him promise to privateer for only two years, Edward comes to underwater. Surface, then swim toward the nearby island. When burning wreckage blocks your path, dive under it and keep heading for shore.
Duncan washes up right after you. He demands passage to Havana and offers one hundred Escudos, but Edward doubts he has the coin. Duncan tries to shoot him, his sand-clogged pistol jams, and he runs. This kicks off the extended parkour tutorial that forms the bulk of the prologue.

Follow Duncan using the green marker over his position. As you go, the game teaches sprinting, directional parkour, climbing, and opening the map. You also learn that dropping into soft spots such as leaf piles lets you land safely from height.
The chase route
- Head right, climb onto the log, and jump across the trees to reach the wooden bridge.
- Parkour off the ledge and leap across the poles.
- Climb the wooden structure and keep pursuing Duncan toward a cluster of huts.
- Move through the huts, dive into the water, and swim across to confront him.
When Edward tries to talk it out, Duncan’s pistol is dry again and he fires. Keep chasing a little longer until a cutscene plays and Duncan lunges with his hidden blade, which fails and leads straight into the combat tutorial.
Beat Duncan in the sword duel
Combat here is blade-to-blade. The hidden blade is reserved for stealth sections, so you cannot fall back on it during this fight. The duel is your introduction to attacking, parrying, and the perfect-parry takedown.

| Action | Input (PC) |
|---|---|
| Lock on to target | Middle mouse button |
| Attack | Left mouse button |
| Parry | Q |
| Perfect-parry takedown | E |
| Sprint | Shift |
| Crouch / hide in bushes | C |
| Open map | M |
Once Duncan is dead, a cutscene reveals a letter on his body. His contacts expect the information he carries and will identify him by his outfit rather than his face, so Edward pulls on Duncan’s robes and decides to reach Havana in his place.
Rescue Stede Bonnet and reach Havana

How you know the prologue is done
Keep sailing until a final cutscene plays. When it finishes, the screen fades to white and the game shows a title drop, which confirms the Edward Kenway prologue is complete. From there the story rolls straight into the next main mission, Lively Havana, where the real adventure across the Caribbean begins.
