Progression in Enshrouded follows the Flame. From the second Flame Altar upgrade onward, upgrades need a boss trophy, except the Level 9 to 10 upgrade, which needs the Broken Guard Of The North Crown relic. That turns the boss roster into the real spine of the game. Beat the right boss, carry its head home, and the altar climbs another level, opening colder and deeper regions as you go.
Quick answer: Eight story bosses gate the Flame, beaten in this order — Scavenger Matron, Fell Wispwyvern, Fell Monstrosity, Fell Sicklescythe, Fell Cyclops, Fell Dragon Youngling, Hydrak’Dal, then Vorgoth.
How boss heads upgrade the Flame
Flame Altar upgrades from Level 2 onward need a specific boss head plus regional materials, except the Level 9 to 10 upgrade, which needs the Broken Guard Of The North Crown relic. The order below is the story order.
The chain includes a step that requires no boss fight: after Hydrak’Dal and before Vorgoth, collect the Broken Guard Of The North Crown relic.
| Order | Boss | Region | Flame upgrade |
|---|---|---|---|
| 1 | Scavenger Matron | Springlands | Level 2 to 3 |
| 2 | Fell Wispwyvern | Revelwood | Level 3 to 4 |
| 3 | Fell Monstrosity | Nomad Highlands | Level 4 to 5 |
| 4 | Fell Sicklescythe | Kindlewastes | Level 5 to 6 |
| 5 | Fell Cyclops | Albaneve Summits | Level 6 to 7 |
| 6 | Fell Dragon Youngling | Albaneve Summits | Level 7 to 8 |
| 7 | Hydrak’Dal | Veilwater Basin | Level 8 to 9 |
| — | — | Level 9 to 10 | |
| 8 | Vorgoth | Cinder’s Cradle | Level 10 to 11 |

Scavenger Matron — Springlands
Your first gated fight sits at the Hill of Scavengers in the Springlands. The Alchemist’s quest “The Alchemist’s Rumors” sends you into the Scavengers’ camp, and the kill drops the Scavenger Matron Helmet, the trophy that takes the Flame from Level 2 to 3. The same kill grants the knowledge for the Improved Grappling Hook, which the Carpenter then crafts.
Either of two Matron variants can drop the helmet. The Scavenger Gorger Matron appears at the Hill of Scavengers and Glennwood’s End, while the Scavenger Grizzler Matron is at Fawnsong Frontier in Revelwood. The Revelwood quest “A Crucial Investigation” also requires defeating the Scavenger Matron at Glennwood’s End.
Fell Wispwyvern — Revelwood
Known in its quest as “the Castle Beast,” the Fell Wispwyvern waits in the castle behind Pikemead’s Reach, the fallen capital of Revelwood. The Blacksmith’s quest “Reach The Capital, Pikemead’s Reach” carries a recommended level of 16 and ends with the objective “Defeat The Castle Beast.” Its reward is the Fell Wispwyvern Head, which upgrades the Flame from Level 3 to 4. The Pike enemy camp sits about 250 m north of Pikemead’s Reach.
Fell Monstrosity — Nomad Highlands
The Fell Monstrosity holds the Cradle of Dusk, an enemy camp roughly 450 m west of the Nomad Highlands Ancient Spire, with a second spot at Conway Camp. It drops the Fell Monstrosity Head for the Level 4 to 5 upgrade, along with Monstrous Ribs and a Shroud Nexus.
Fell Sicklescythe — Kindlewastes
In the Kindlewastes, start the Carpenter’s quest “Sun Temple Stories” by speaking with Emily Fray, the Farmer, about Elin’s Curse; next, head to the Haunted Sun Temple near Brittlebush. Completing “Defeat The Specter In The Haunted Sun Temple” earns the Fell Sicklescythe Head, which advances the Flame from Level 5 to 6. Another Fell Sicklescythe encounter is in Ternion Mine, roughly 250 m from the Haunted Sun Temple.
Fell Cyclops — Albaneve Summits
Called the “Evil Eye,” this one lives in the Albaneve Summits. After you light the Flame atop the region’s Ancient Spire, the quest “Ignite The Coldest Elixir Well” sends you into the main Elixir Well with the objective “Defeat The ‘Evil Eye’ Inside The Elixir Well.” The Fell Cyclops Head upgrades the Flame from Level 6 to 7, and the fight also drops the Enshrouded Cyclops Eye.
Fell Dragon Youngling — Howling Peak
The “corrupted beast” broods at Howling Peak in the Albaneve Summits. The Flame’s quest “Slaying The Corrupted Beast,” recommended level 34, has you light every Balefire around the innermost mountain to wake the beast, then “Challenge The Beast On Howling Peak.” Its head carries the Flame from Level 7 to 8, which lets Flame Altars keep the cold away when you build.
Hydrak’Dal — Veilwater Basin
The Drak leader is fought at two spots near Orville in the Veilwater Basin. The Fisher’s quest “Vengeance” has you bring a keepsake, Drak Scales, vanquish 25 Drak, and then “Challenge The Drak Leader.” The Hydrak’Dal Head upgrades the Flame from Level 8 to 9 and lets you go deeper into the Veilwater Basin.
Broken Guard Of The North Crown — the relic step
To reach the final boss, first follow “Crown Of Sorrow” to the Cromville Throne Room and retrieve the Broken Guard Of The North Crown. That relic is required for the Level 9 to 10 upgrade, which grants access to Cinder’s Cradle. There is no boss to defeat for it; finding the item is the task.

Vorgoth in Cinder’s Cradle — the final boss
Vorgoth waits in the Mother Flame’s Domicile inside the Ancient Citadel, high above Cinder’s Cradle. The Ancient Researcher’s quest “Cinders Of The End” ends with “Defeat Vorgoth.” Reaching him means crossing the floating Sky Islands of the Ancient Citadel, and on the way during “Reach The Ancient Capital” you clear an Ancient S.P.D.R. Construct, which drops Archaic Core, Archaic Shards, Moonstone and the Ancient S.P.D.R. Construct Eye.
The fight runs across two forms. First is Vorgoth, Champion of the Shroud, a humanoid phase in the ornate arena at the summit.

Bring him down and he returns as Vorgoth, The Wanderer’s Vessel, a far larger second form that fills the arena.

Defeating both forms drops Vorgoth’s Bound Essence and Vorgoth’s Eye, which takes the Flame from Level 10 to 11, plus the Shroud Vessel’s Greatsword and Legendary Runes.
Optional bosses by region
The boss map marks their spots. Plenty of other bosses give materials and trophies, but none of them feed a Flame upgrade. You can take them on for loot and crafting mats whenever you want.
- Springlands: Fell Thunderbrute (near the Small Flint Mine; drops the Fell Thunderbrute Head and a Shroud Core), Fell Striker (Ferndale), Direwolf (Ancient Vault), Vukah Brawler (the Carpenter’s “Vukah Ceremony” at the Low Meadows camp).
- Revelwood: Armored Fell Thunderbrute (Ancient Bridge), Fell Critter Queen (Gate to the Pillars of Creation), Shroud Stalker (“Maelstrom” Construction Site), Hollow Cyclops at the bottom of the Revelwood Hollow Halls (the Collector’s “Ectoplasm Press For The Collector,” recommended level 17).
- Nomad Highlands: The Vukah Brawler can be found at Vukah Cave Pillar and Vukah Arena. An Ancient S.P.D.R. Construct is another enemy in the region.
- Albaneve Summits: Scavenger Tyrant (Gateway Outpost “Drifa,” Rothstep and Forge of Obsidia), Ancient S.P.D.R. Construct (Frontier Research Lab).
- Veilwater Basin: Hollow Wispwyvern, the boss of the Veilwater Basin Hollow Halls (drops Icy Giant Bones and the Hollow Wispwyvern Head).
- Cinder’s Cradle: On the route to Vorgoth in the Ancient Citadel, you’ll encounter an Ancient S.P.D.R. Construct.
Keep spare heads for base trophies
You can give most boss heads to the Hunter to make wall trophies that add Comfort to your base. For a Fell Wispwyvern Trophy, gather 2 Nails, 2 Wood Planks and 1 Fell Wispwyvern Head; the Bronze, Iron and Gold versions require additional heads. To keep the displays available, save a few extra heads after each Flame upgrade instead of using your final one.
