Palworld Handbooks: Every Work Suitability Book and the Best Pals to Use Them On

All 12 Handbooks explained, where to farm them, and the ideal base Pal to permanently boost each Work Suitability.

All 12 Handbooks explained, where to farm them, and the ideal base Pal to permanently boost each Work Suitability.

Handbooks are consumable items in Palworld that permanently raise a single Pal’s Work Suitability. Each book adds +1 to one specific trait, and because you can stack multiple copies on the same Pal, any Pal in the game can eventually reach the maximum Work Suitability level of 10 in a chosen job.

Quick answer: Spend each Handbook on a Pal that already has a high base level in the matching trait so you use fewer books. Renjishi for Kindling, Shaolong for Watering, Solenne for Handiwork, Orserk for Generating Electricity, and Blazamut for Mining are the strongest targets.

Every Handbook and what it upgrades

There are 12 Handbooks in total, one for each Work Suitability. They all share the same rule: read once, gain +1 affinity in that trait, permanently, on the Pal that consumed it. Some spots hold a single copy, while others contain several copies of the same book.

Applied Cooling Handbook I Applied Cooling Handbook I+1 Cooling affinity

The bonus is tied to the individual Pal that reads the book. It does not transfer if you condense, replace, or rebuild your worker roster, so treat every Handbook as a permanent investment in that one Pal.

Best Pal to use each Handbook on

Because Handbooks are rare, the smart play is to pick a Pal with a high base level in the trait you want, then top it off to level 10 with books. Pals that start at level 6 to 8 need only a handful of copies, while low-level Pals would drain your entire stash. The picks below combine a strong base stat with useful secondary traits.

Work SuitabilityBest PalWhy
Kindling RenjishiBase Kindling of 8, plus solid Handiwork, Transporting, and Gathering.
Watering ShaolongHighest base Watering in the game; pair with Insomnia to work 24/7.
Planting DandilordBase Planting of 8, with strong Handiwork and Medicine Production too.
Generating Electricity OrserkBase level 8 and easy to Awaken, ideal for mass production.
HandiworkSolenneBase Handiwork of 8; runs the Demon’s Hand passive for extra work speed.
Gathering HartalisBase Gathering of 7 with an equally high Lumbering of 7.
Lumbering Celesdir NoctBase Lumbering of 8, so only a few books are needed to max.
Mining BlazamutBase Mining of 7, and can also hit a high level of Kindling at 8.
Medicine Production SilvanceBase Medicine Production of 8 across a total of five Work Suitabilities.
Cooling BastigorHighest base Cooling; also handles Lumbering and Mining.
Transporting Knocklem IgnisBase Transporting of 7, with Mining at 7 and Kindling at 5.

Note: The best base Pals such as Silvance or Orserk already sit at level 6 to 8 in at least one trait, which is the minimum needed to run end-game base structures. That means you spend far fewer Handbooks on them compared with a low-level worker.

Where to get Handbooks

Handbooks are deliberately rare, so there is no single guaranteed farm. They come from a mix of merchants and world events, and the loot pools are random outside of the merchant purchase.

SourceDetails
Medal MerchantsBuy any Handbook for 300 Dog Coins each. This is the only reliable, on-demand source.
Supply DropsRandom contents. Lower the supply drop interval in world settings to trigger them more often.
Hack TerminalsComplete the hack and collect rewards inside the tower. Contents are random aside from Dog Coins.
Ocean SalvagesUnderwater salvage spots may contain Handbooks. Bring a fishing tool or a swimming mount to reach them.
Treasure Boxes & Meteorite eventsBoth can drop Handbooks as part of a wider loot pool.
Lucky PalsDefeating or capturing a Lucky Pal can reward Work Suitability enhancement items along with large experience.
Medal Merchant

If you want a predictable supply, Medal Merchants are the way to go, since you can simply buy the exact book you need for Dog Coins. For everything else, treat Supply Drops and chests as repeat-farm routes rather than a single guaranteed pull for the specific trait you are chasing.

Handbooks vs the Pal Condenser

Before spending rare books, remember there is a free path to higher Work Suitability. The Pal Condenser lets you feed multiple copies of the same species into one Pal to rank it up, raising its stats and Work Suitabilities along the way.

Condenser rankPals required
14
28
312
424

The Condenser works best on Pals with a single Work Suitability, such as Jormuntide Ignis, because every rank pours into that one trait. A Pal with several traits, like Anubis, dilutes each rank across multiple stats, so its gains per rank are smaller. A Pal maxes out at rank 4.

Tip: If you have Handbooks to spare, apply them to Dark Type Pals. They do not sleep and keep working around the clock, so the boosted trait is used far more efficiently.

How to use a Handbook and confirm it worked

Match the book to the job first. Applied Mining Handbook I only raises Mining, Applied Cooling Handbook I only raises Cooling, and so on. There is no universal book that boosts everything.
Choose a Pal you plan to keep long-term, ideally one with strong passives, good stats, and a high base level in the target trait. Avoid wasting books on temporary workers you will replace after the next capture run.
Use the Handbook on that Pal. Its Work Suitability for the matching job rises by one level. Repeat with more copies until you reach the level you need, up to a maximum of 10.

You will know it worked when the Pal’s Work Suitability value for that trait shows one point higher in its status screen. Keep in mind this is separate from Pal Enhancement at the Statue of Power, which uses Pal Souls to raise HP, Attack, Defense, and Work Speed rather than the Work Suitability level itself.

Because the +1 is locked to that single Pal, plan your investment carefully. A specialized base Pal that already sits near the cap gives you the most value per book, letting you save the rest of your Handbooks for other traits you still need to max.
