Captain John Price spends Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 as a fugitive. He killed General Shepherd, the world is hunting him, and he has stopped taking orders from anyone. His half of the campaign runs alongside Private Park’s war on the Korean Peninsula. It follows one revenge mission across New York, Paris, Mumbai, and North Korea, and it ends with a scene that closes out the rebooted Modern Warfare series for Infinity Ward’s version of the character. Everything below spoils that ending.
Quick answer: Price kills the Archer, Makarov’s father, with a combat knife on a frozen lake. He then dies of his wounds as Ghost arrives, closes his eyes, and leaves with the weapon canister.

Add to Google Preferences →How Price’s story opens: Shepherd’s murder and a global manhunt
The prologue montage recaps the earlier reboot games. It shows Task Force 141 forming, the betrayals by Shepherd and Phillip Graves, and Price shooting Shepherd. An Infinity Ward splash screen then gives way to a wall of news broadcasts. North Korea has invaded South Korea using an EMP sound-wave blast. Russia has seized territory in the Middle East. General Shepherd has been murdered inside the Pentagon, and an international manhunt for Price is underway.
That setup explains Price’s position for the rest of the campaign. He has no unit and no official backing. His only steady contact is his former CIA handler, Kate Laswell.
New York: Laswell, the Nox club, and Makarov’s death
Five days before the invasion, Price climbs out of a New York subway station. He picks up a dead-drop envelope from a lockbox and opens secure comms with Laswell from a hideout. She tells him US forces are pulling out of the Black Sea region and that Ultranationalist cells are moving on orders from someone “at the head of the table.” Price picks his way in through the money and goes after financier Milena Romanova at a club called Nox.

Outside Nox at night, Price watches Milena walk in with Vladimir Makarov and follows them inside.

He breaks into an office, disarms Milena, and presses her for Makarov’s location. When she won’t give him anything he can act on, he shoots her.

Price finds Makarov anyway, in a snowy alleyway. The fight is hand-to-hand with counter prompts, and the game tells you to tap LB to block just before a hit lands to parry. Price beats Makarov to death. Armed cartel soldiers grab him seconds later.
Valeria Garza’s offer and the Graves flashback
Price is brought hooded before Valeria Garza, head of the Las Almas Cartel. She flips through a notebook hit list and proposes a deal. Price helps her move an acoustic EMP weapon, and the sale will draw out its buyer, a high-ranking Russian codenamed “the Archer,” who is the person Price actually wants.

A flashback then fills in another loose end from the reboot. Commander Phillip Graves of Shadow Company lies beaten on a warehouse floor and tells Price there is no coming back from this. Price shoots him in the forehead. The scene shows how far past the line Price had already gone before the cartel deal.

Paris (“Traffic”) and the Mumbai blackout
Paris convoy and pursuit
Three days before the invasion, in the mission “Traffic,” Price and Valeria escort the weapon case through Paris. A rival French mafia crew ambushes the convoy, which turns into a running vehicle gunfight.

After a crash, the pair take an armored van. Police helicopters box them in through the tunnels and highway, so Valeria fires the sonic EMP device and knocks the choppers out of the sky. At a desert airstrip afterward, Laswell calls and tells Price he’s on the wrong side of a cartel weapons deal. He refuses to stand down.
Mumbai high-rise and rooftop betrayal
In Mumbai, masked attackers hit the convoy in an alley on its way to a high-rise meeting point. Valeria triggers the canister. The blackout takes down the city’s power grid and an SAS helicopter carrying Task Force 141. Ghost and Gaz survive and confront Price inside the tower. Ghost and Price are mid-scuffle when Valeria’s soldiers restrain both 141 operators so she can use them as leverage.
The Archer lands on the rooftop in a Black Hawk and takes the canister. Valeria then demands payment and orders her men to open fire. The double-cross fails. She is gunned down, and Price is taken.
Gaz’s death and the North Korean prison
Price, Ghost, and Gaz end up tied to chairs in a dark interrogation room. Gaz confronts Price over the ethical lines he has crossed. Then the Archer walks in and shoots Kyle “Gaz” Garrick in the head at point-blank range, in front of both men.
The story picks up in the “Current Day” inside a North Korean military prison, where Price is being marched down a corridor. He overpowers his guards and fights through soldiers with his bare hands.
Modern Warfare 4 ending: “Greater Good” and the frozen lake
In “Greater Good,” Price sits inside a military truck with the Archer as the convoy climbs through snowy mountains. An explosion hits the column. Price wrestles a guard for his weapon while the truck rolls off the cliff and down onto a frozen lake.
After escaping the wreckage, Price snatches a rifle, but his clash with the Archer becomes a hand-to-hand fight across the ice. The Archer reveals during the struggle that Vladimir Makarov was his son, turning the hunt into a father’s revenge against the man Price had beaten to death in New York. Price prevails and plunges a combat knife into the Archer’s throat.
He doesn’t walk away from it. Badly wounded, Price lies next to the body as Ghost reaches the lake. His last words are about the man who died arguing with him:
“Gaz was right. Hold the line.”
Ghost closes Price’s eyes, picks up the weapon canister, and walks off alone.
