Platforming Across Outer Columns

The Lance is a throwable spear in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse. You get it early in Holy Innocents’ Cemetery, the City of Paris area where Rose hunts down the Prophetess. The weapon is in an ornate chest on the roof of a large iron-gated building in the cemetery’s eastern ruins. Before you can reach the chest, you have to pull a lever and survive the ambush it triggers.

Quick answer: Start at the Cloister Mirror of Life and head east through Memorial for the Dead, Fountain of the Innocents, and Fountain of the Lost. Pull the gate lever, clear the ambush, then climb to the rooftop chest.

What you need before going for the Lance

The route is mostly traversal. It uses Rose’s grapple on glowing rings, plus a lot of wall jumping between tall structures. If you can already swing from those golden rings, you can reach the chest. You also have to fight once along the way, so arrive with enough health to take on a small group.

  • Starting point: the Mirror of Life in the Cloister, Holy Innocents’ Cemetery
  • Direction: east the whole way
  • Traversal: grapple rings and wall jumps
  • Combat: face a single ambush featuring flying gargoyles and one large foe carrying a shield
  • Map objective in this area: “UNLOCK THE GATE TO THE CATACOMBS”

Lance route from the Cloister Mirror of Life

Use fast travel to reach the Cloister’s Mirror of Life, or walk there if you’re already in the cemetery. Use this checkpoint as your starting location. If the climb goes wrong, return here.

Go right through the ruined arches of the Cloister and fight past the enemies there. Keep going until the game moves you into Memorial for the Dead.
Head east from the cemetery grounds to enter Fountain of the Innocents. The route now climbs upward: grapple between platforms using the glowing rings, then scale the outer sides of the ruined towers.

At the top, drop down through the tower’s interior chute. It leads to the lower cemetery path, where more enemies are waiting.

Head east along the lower route and cross the ruined columns and platforms. There are spike pits under several gaps, so time your jumps carefully.

Keep going east through the ruins. Swing from the grapple points and wall jump up the gothic window frames. The climb ends at a staircase that leads higher into the ruins.

Enter Fountain of the Lost. A “MAP UPDATED” notice confirms you are in the right place. Grapple across the rings above the green water to reach the far side of the chasm.

Climb the cemetery stairs on the other side. At the top is a large iron gate on a gothic building, with a golden chest on its roof. That chest holds the Lance.

Gate lever ambush and the rooftop chest

The chest is easy to see but impossible to reach until you deal with the gate. A lever mechanism stands in front of it. As soon as you interact with it, flying gargoyles and an armored, shield-bearing enemy spawn around you. If your health is low, grab health pickups from enemies you defeated earlier on the stairs before you touch the lever.

Once the ambush is cleared, grapple and jump up around the archway until you are standing on the roof above the closed gate. Walk to the chest and press the interact prompt (E on keyboard) to open it.

How to confirm the Lance is unlocked

When you open the chest, a weapon card appears. It reads “LANCE” and “ORDINARY” and shows the throw instruction. The card also gives you a “HOLD TO EQUIP” prompt and a “CONTINUE” option. Hold the prompt to switch to the spear right away, or continue and equip it later.

Afterward, open the inventory and go to Equipment, then Armoury. The Lance appears there with its full stat block. You can test it on the bats near the gate. Tap attack for close thrusts, or hold attack to aim and release to throw it.

Lance stats compared with other tier 1 weapons

The Lance is a tier 1, Ordinary-rarity spear. Rose’s other two Ordinary tier 1 weapons are the Whip and the Longsword, so they are the most useful comparison.

Lance matches the Whip and the Longsword on ATK, stagger power, and mana per hit. Its attack power falls between the two. What sets it apart is its special: hold attack to aim, then release to throw the spear at a target. Its combo ends in a Push, which shoves enemies away. That fits the weapon’s description as a long-range tool for holding your position.

Whip and Longsword work differently. The Whip deals extra damage with the far end of its swing. The Longsword hits harder when you attack right after a backdash or slide.

Because it sits at tier 1, the Lance is a starter-grade spear rather than an endgame pick. Still, it is the first weapon in the cemetery that lets Rose hit enemies from a distance without relying on whip reach. That makes it worth the detour on your way to the Gate to the Catacombs.
