The water wheel crank on the Bridge of the Millers in Castlevania: Belmont's Curse

Beating The Fallen in Castlevania: Belmont’s Curse opens a larger stretch of the map. The boss drops the first of three keys for the sealed Catacombs gate, and the game hands you a grappling tool. From there the path climbs out of the sewers, crosses the city, and drops deep under a cemetery to reach the next key holder.

Quick answer: Take the Arcane Whip after the fight, then travel to the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery and work down to the Serpents’ Lair. Medusa waits there and drops the second key.

The Fallen’s Key and the Catacombs gate

When The Fallen goes down, you absorb the boss and learn the Holy Cross spell. You also receive The Fallen’s Key, which carries this description:

The Fallen's Key
The Fallen’s Key

One of three keys needed to open the sealed door to the Catacombs. Obtained by defeating The Fallen.

Use the key on the large gate in the boss chamber. A new objective appears, “Unlock the gate to the Catacombs”, and the gate stays shut until you return with the other two keys. Walk right into the sewer tunnels to begin the trip. How the three-key gate works is in how to open the Gate to the Catacombs, and the fight itself is in our The Fallen boss guide.

You pass through the Prison Tower on the way to Medusa, and Joan sits on its roof. She can be fought later, so the route below heads for Medusa.

Arcane Whip: How the new traversal tool works

The conversation right after the fight gives you the Arcane Whip. The tutorial screen reads:

Arcane Whip
Arcane Whip

Arcane Whip. Aim with [right stick] then press [R2] to hook onto Luminous Anchors or Enemies and reach new areas.

  • Round anchors: hold R2 to swing.
  • Sharpened anchors: press R2 to pull yourself straight to them.

Much of the path to Medusa depends on these anchors.

Route from the sewers to the Holy Innocents’ Cemetery

Climb out of the sewers into the Court of Miracles using the whip anchors. Cross the water to keep moving.
At the Bridge of the Millers, interact with the crank (R1) to turn the great water wheel. Ride the wheel up, and the map updates when you reach the top.
Pass through a mirror chamber into the Burned District and cross the burning rooftops. In the Seer’s Hovel, a chest on the high ledge holds the Crypt Key relic.
Enter the Prison Tower and turn the winches to lower the bridges. Push through the Guard Level and the Torture Level, using the whip to climb.
In the Upper Tower, take the lever bridge and then the chain elevator. That leads on toward the Street of the Tomb Masons.
Look for the “Street of the Tomb Masons” banner when you arrive. Push the metal crate here to reach an upper nook with a Wise Heart Fragment.
Walk left onto the bridge, where a sign points left to “Holy Innocents’ Cemetery” and right to “Prison Tower”. Go left.
Red barriers close behind you, and a giant skeletal beast attacks on the bridge. Defeat it to open the way into the cemetery. Its attacks are in our Bone Beast guide.

Holy Innocents’ Cemetery down to Medusa

Enter through the Cemetery Entrance, which has a mirror, and continue into the Cloister. Dodge the chandeliers as they fall.
Reach the Sepulcher of the Knight. A spirit there points you toward the Roman Baths.
Descend through the Roman Aqueduct into the Roman Baths and the Hot Springs. Pull the levers (R1) in the Roman Baths to get through.
Stop at the Mirror of Life just before the Serpents’ Lair and save there. Then step into the lair to face Medusa. The arena approach is in how to find the Medusa boss location, and the fight in our Medusa boss guide.

Beating Medusa awards The Prophetess’s Key, the second of the three keys for the Catacombs gate. With it in hand, Joan on the Prison Tower roof holds the last one. The next leg is in where to go after Medusa.
