The Spectral Mutation is the Halloween-only mutation in Steal an Egg. You can’t buy it from the regular event shop. You earn it through a short chain inside the Halloween Dimension: help a ghost dog, win a fishing run, ride a haunted train, and vacuum up ghosts for a currency called Souls. Even after all that, the mutation lands on an egg only about one time in four.
Quick answer: Finish Echo’s Memories, clear the Haunted Rod minigame for the Phantom Express Ticket, ride the train, farm Souls with the Ghost Vacuum, and trade them at the Soul Shrine for a consumable.

Spectral Mutation requirements
All of it happens in the Halloween Dimension, which arrived with Update 9 alongside the Graveyard, Haunted Swamp, and Abandoned Manor biomes. Its portal sits near the Trails Shop at spawn. Before you start, make sure you can meet each of these:
- 2.5 million Speed to enter the Halloween Dimension.
- All four of Echo’s lost items returned to him.
- The Haunted Rod fishing course cleared at its treasure chest.
- A Phantom Express arrival at the Haunted Swamp station.
- Enough Souls for one Spectral Mutation consumable.

Add to Google Preferences →Spectral Mutation cost, odds, and income multiplier
| Property | Value |
|---|---|
| Income multiplier | x2.75 |
| Currency | Souls |
| Consumable cost | 500 Souls (was 1,000) |
| Trade at Soul Shrine | Guaranteed |
| Chance to apply | 25% per consumable |
The price dropped from 1,000 Souls at launch to 500 Souls in newer builds, so check the number on the Soul Extractor panel before you start farming. Buying the consumable always works. The roll on the egg is the part that can fail.
Spectral alone turns an egg earning $100/s into one earning $275/s, before any weight or size bonuses. Mutations stack additively, so Spectral adds +1.75 on top of the base x1. Paired with Golden (x2.5), the result is 1 + 1.75 + 1.5 = x4.25.
How to get the Phantom Express Ticket
The ticket is a quest reward. It costs nothing, but you can’t board the train without it. Echo is a blue ghost dog with a yellow exclamation mark over his head. He waits outside the house with the orange witch hat, diagonally left of the Halloween Dimension spawn, next to a cauldron, some bones, and three tombs. He has lost four keepsakes. You can collect them in any order by pressing E.
Echo’s lost item locations
| Lost item | Where it is |
|---|---|
| Mr. Squeaky (white rabbit toy) | Giant pumpkin altar near Echo |
| Chewed Bone | Haunted Swamp rocks by the pier |
| Old Collar | Across the railway tracks, by a large tree |
| Old Photograph | Behind rocks and pumpkins, left of the Abandoned Manor gate |
Items can sit slightly off these landmarks. The Chewed Bone sometimes shows up near the Phantom Express ladder or along the riverbank, and Mr. Squeaky near a nearby pumpkin house. The Bone and Collar are both close to the railway, so one trip covers both. Echo’s clue says “Swampy Marsh,” which just means the Haunted Swamp.
Echo’s Memories and the Haunted Rod minigame

Neither returning Echo’s items nor holding the Haunted Rod gives you the ticket. It only drops once the chest opens.
Phantom Express schedule and boarding
The Phantom Express stops at the Haunted Swamp railway station, on the right side of the Corrupted Realm map. It arrives about every 30 minutes, usually around the hour and half-hour, and leaves again instead of waiting between runs. Timing can drift between servers, so go by the station countdown rather than your own clock. When the train pulls in, a “The Phantom Express has arrived!” banner appears and a “Boarding Closes In” timer starts counting down.
Stand on the platform under the Phantom Express sign with your ticket and use the “Board Train” prompt. A “Ticket punched! All aboard!” message confirms it worked, and the train heads to a separate ghost area. That area is the only place to earn Souls.

Your first boarding uses up the ticket, but you only ever need one. After that you can ride again without a new ticket. If you miss a departure, wait for the next countdown. You don’t have to redo Echo’s quest.
Farming Souls with the Ghost Vacuum
When the train drops you off, step into the glowing green circle and use the “Pick Up Vacuum” prompt to get the Ghost Vacuum. Aim it at floating ghosts to capture them. Each ghost type pays a fixed number of Souls, which the game also calls Haunted Spirits. Souls are separate from the Candy Corn you earn elsewhere in the dimension.

| Ghost | Souls per capture | Catches for 500 | Catches for 1,000 |
|---|---|---|---|
| Ghouler (boss) | 225 | 3 | 5 |
| Vengeful Spirit | 150 | 4 | 7 |
| Haunted Spirit | 35 | 15 | 29 |
| Lost Spirit | 10 | 50 | 100 |
The difference between ghost types is huge. Three Ghouler catches buy a consumable at the current price, while Lost Spirits take dozens. Go after Ghoulers and Vengeful Spirits whenever they’re nearby, and only vacuum the small ones when nothing better is around.
Trade Souls and apply the Spectral Mutation

A “Spectral mutation applied!” banner means it worked, and the egg’s income now reflects the x2.75 multiplier. If no banner appears, the roll failed. The egg stays as it was, the consumable is gone, and you’ll need more Souls to try again. On average that’s about four consumables per success, though a 25% chance doesn’t promise a hit within four tries.
Failed rolls still use up the consumable, so save them for an egg you actually plan to keep.
Phantom Express Ticket or boarding not working
- No ticket: make sure Echo’s counter reads 4/4 and your fishing run actually reached the chest.
- No “Board Train” prompt: stand at the Haunted Swamp station and wait for the next arrival countdown.
- Lost item won’t pick up: walk around the object to retrigger the prompt, or join a new server.
Steal an Egg updates often, so Soul prices and odds may change again while the Halloween event runs. You only earn the ticket once, though. After that, getting Spectral comes down to riding the train, catching the biggest ghosts, and trading at the shrine until a roll lands.
