Enshrouded: How to Reach and Rescue the Hunter (Athalan Skree)

The route through the Ancient Vault – Hunter, the mid-air grapple over its lava pit, and the pod that wakes Athalan Skree.

The route through the Ancient Vault – Hunter, the mid-air grapple over its lava pit, and the pod that wakes Athalan Skree.

The Hunter in Enshrouded is Athalan Skree, asleep in a pod deep inside the Ancient Vault – Hunter. Getting there is mostly a walk. The one exception is a lava pit that blocks the vault’s ground floor, and it needs a specific grapple move.

Quick answer: Bring the Grappling Hook and go by day. At the lava pit, look up until the ceiling point shows E, then run off, jump, and tap E mid-air. Take the north stairs, pass the round central door, and press “E Awaken Survivor”.

What you need before entering the Ancient Vault – Hunter

  • The Grappling Hook, crafted at a Workbench. The vault cannot be finished without it.
  • Daylight. The courtyard outside the vault is empty during the day.
  • Reach it by coming in from the western side and cutting through the Vukah camp.

You can find the Grappling Hook’s recipe and materials in our guide on how to get the Grappling Hook.

At night, Vukah occupy the courtyard and can knock you off its edges onto the ground below, and there is no way back up from there.

The Ancient Vault – Hunter is in the Springlands, and the region’s other survivors, quests and places are in our Enshrouded Springlands region guide.

Our guide to finding the Hunter’s vault covers its location northeast of Braelyn Bridge and west of the Springlands Ancient Spire, and starting the Hunter Becomes The Hunted quest.

Reach the vault door through the courtyard

Enter from the west via the Vukah camp, then ascend the wooden steps positioned on the vault’s western side.

Walk straight across the vault courtyard at the top of those stairs. During the day, nothing stops you here.

On the courtyard’s easternmost side, take the stairway upward to the open entrance in the vault’s west wall; red light shines within.

Cross the lava pit with the Grappling Hook

Immediately beyond the entrance, the floor ends at a lava pit. Step into it and you fall into the lava and die. Pressing E from the rim does not fire the hook either: it latched on for us while we were in the air, aimed at the ceiling point.

A grapple point is fixed to the ceiling over the pit. Tilt your view upward and adjust it until its E prompt appears.

Once the prompt is visible, sprint from the edge and leap. Press E midair; the hook catches and carries you in a swing over the lava.
Jump as the swing ends to land on the far side. If you give no input when the swing finishes, you fall into the lava. A good landing puts you in the rubble facing barred windows and a wall lamp.

Climb to the second floor and wake the Hunter

Take the north flight of stairs on the east wall. There are stairs on both sides of the lava, but the south flight ends on a ledge that drops you back to the floor.

From the upper landing of the northern flight, face west and ascend the next stairway.

The screen then displays the location name “ANCIENT VAULT — HUNTER”.

Take the second-floor corridor southward until you reach the broad, circular central door, already open and slid aside. Pass through it heading east to enter the pod hall.

The vault also has a locked door with three symbols above it. Opening it is optional and not needed to rescue the Hunter; see how to solve the Hunter vault door puzzle.

How to tell the Hunter rescue worked

The game confirms the rescue right away. A “SOUL DISCOVERED!” screen appears with “ATHALAN SKREE” and a portrait, along with “RECIPE UNLOCKED! Dried Fur at Drying Rack”.

A second banner follows, reading “RECIPE UNLOCKED! Scrap Arrow (+14 more) at Hunter”.

To make Dried Fur at the Drying Rack, follow our guide to making Dried Fur, and see every recipe the Hunter crafts in our full list of Hunter recipes.

Waking the pod frees the Hunter; to have Athalan Skree craft for you, summon the Hunter at your base with the Summoning Staff, as with other survivors.

Summon the Hunter at your base

Back at your base, select Athalan Skree’s Summoning Staff on the action bar. Its panel reads “Athalan Skree”, “Hunter” and “Not placed yet”, with a Roaming Range bar.

Aim at the ground where you want the Hunter to stand, and a blue ghost of Athalan Skree will show the spot. Left click to place the Hunter there.

Walk up to Athalan Skree, and the Hunter greets you with “The world of the living calls me once more. I’m a huntress — I can help you survive. Let’s not squander our time.” The prompt “E Talk & Craft” then shows on screen.

Press E to talk to Athalan Skree, and the talk menu lists “Craft · Upgrade”, “Finding Salt”, “A Test Of Skill” and “Missing shelter for bed”, while the bed icon under ROAMING RANGE shows its roof in red. Placing a bed with walls and a roof over it fixes that, as covered in our guide to building a bed shelter.
