Embervale is stacked with cliffs, towers, and broken ledges you cannot reach on foot, and the Grappling Hook is the tool that changes that. The recipe appears once you have picked up String, Shroud Wood, Animal Fur, or Shroud Spores, so you do not need to clear a quest before making one. You just need to gather the materials and have a Workbench ready.

Quick answer: Craft the Grappling Hook at a Workbench using 4 Metal Scraps, 7 String, and 10 Shroud Spores. The recipe appears once you have picked up String, Shroud Wood, Animal Fur, or Shroud Spores.

Craft the Grappling Hook at a Workbench

The game sums up the tool plainly: “A sturdy tool that can help to cross many chasms along the way.” You will need the following:

  • 4 Metal Scraps
  • 7 String
  • 10 Shroud Spores
Build a Workbench, then open it to view the Grappling Hook recipe under the Survival tab. The recipe unlocks automatically once you have collected String, Shroud Wood, Animal Fur, or Shroud Spores.

Return to the Workbench, craft the Grappling Hook, and equip it. You know it worked when the hook sits in your equipment: aim at a Grappling Hook anchor in the world, activate it, and you will pull yourself up or swing across the gap.

The Blacksmith’s “Grappling Hook” quest puts it this way: “A Grappling Hook is vital for exploration. It can be used to swing across chasms or reach elevated locations. Look for Grappling Hook Pull Anchors in the world once you have crafted your Grappling Hook to use it. You can craft the Grappling Hook at a Workbench. The Grappling Hook is needed to climb the Ancient Spire!”

Upgrade to the Improved Grappling Hook

The Improved Grappling Hook does exactly what its description says: “Requires less stamina. Can be activated at larger ranges.” You cannot craft it from scratch. The recipe unlocks through the Alchemist’s quest The Alchemist’s Rumors, which points you toward the Scavengers’ camp with the line, “Seek out their camp and smite them down to unlock an improved tool.”

Defeat the Scavenger Matron at the camp. Clearing her is what unlocks the recipe.
Craft the Improved Grappling Hook at the Carpenter. The recipe takes 1 Grappling Hook, 1 Shroud Core, 2 Shroud Liquid, and 3 Shroud Spores, and your existing hook is consumed in the process. The Carpenter notes that “the improved tool will require less stamina to use.”

Every grappling hook compared

There are three hooks in total, each a step up from the last. The Improved and Underwater versions are both made at the Carpenter.

The Underwater Grappling Hook, described as “A grappling hook that can be used underwater,” sits at the top of the chain. Its recipe unlocks once you find one out in the world, and it is crafted at the Carpenter from 1 Improved Grappling Hook, 1 Shroud Radiance, 2 Pink Mushroom Meat, 3 Shroud Relic, and 2 Gold Dust. Each tier folds the previous hook into the next, so keep the lower version until you are ready to upgrade.

Build your own grapple anchors

After obtaining a hook, you can place anchor points on structures and grapple through your base or across gaps you create. The Blacksmith makes both anchors at the Forge. Picking up Copper Bars unlocks both recipes.

  • Grappling Hook Pull Anchor — takes 3 Metal Sheets and 1 Copper Bars. Item text: “Add this pull anchor to your buildings to pull yourself forward and onto other platforms. Requires a Grappling Hook to activate.”
  • Grappling Hook Swing Anchor — takes 3 Metal Sheets and 1 Copper Bars. Item text: “Add this swing anchor to your buildings to swing across chasms. Requires a Grappling Hook to activate.”
