In Chapter 1 of Final Fantasy Resonance, the main story rewards you with a chocobo in the desert settlement of Kol. First spend the night at the inn; afterward, the Chocobo Stablehand in the village center gives you one at no charge.

Quick answer: Reach the Village of Kol in Chapter 1, stay the night at its inn, then talk to the Chocobo Stablehand by the chocobos in the middle of the village. The chocobo is free. Press R on the field map to summon it and R again to dismount.

Where to get a chocobo: the Village of Kol

Chocobos unlock through the Chapter 1 story, “Tailing the Truth”. Once Fina joins the party outside the royal capital, your quest switches to “Go to the village of Kol”. The village sits in the desert on the large western landmass, across the long rope bridge west of the capital. The full route from the capital is covered in the Grandshelt Castle walkthrough.

Kol is where the party lays eyes on chocobos for the first time, and Fina reacts with “What are those!? Are they some kind of giant bird?”

The village is easy to miss on the field. It shows up as a small palm-tree oasis model on the sand, just north of a small rope bridge over a chasm and below a cliff with a blue light pillar. Walking into the middle of the model does nothing. Instead, stand on its right or front edge until “F Proceed” appears along with the “Village of Kol” banner in the bottom left, then press F.

Spend the night at the inn first

The party reaches Kol in the evening, so you can’t rent a chocobo right away. The quest changes to “Stay at the inn in the village of Kol”, and Lasswell stands in the way of the east exit. He says the group will head out after a night at the inn, adding “At this point, it would be impossible to outrun nightfall.”

Lasswell blocks the east exit until the party has spent the night at the inn.

Look for the inn near the water on Kol’s northern side. To make the “F Open” prompt appear at the entrance, stand directly in front of the door’s center. The innkeeper is inside, behind the counter on the left, with a yellow ! above him; on the right, a pink save point stands beside the beds.

Talk to the innkeeper. He notices the party’s Grandshelt insignia and offers the beds at no cost: “Been a slow day and the beds are empty anyway. You can stay free of charge, if you’d like.”

Use the save point before turning in. The System Menu has no Save option in town, so this circle is the only way to save in Kol (more on how to save).

A short conversation plays out overnight, and the party wakes up outside the inn. Rain says “Let’s grab some chocobos.”, the quest updates to “Rent a chocobo”, and the game autosaves.

Talk to the Chocobo Stablehand

In the center of Kol, locate the building marked by a red-and-white striped awning. The chocobos are waiting directly outside.

Rain explains that the party wants to rent some chocobos. The stablehand recognises the insignia and replies “That insignia tells me you’re a knight of Grandshelt. Your service has me in your debt. Please, take any that you’d like.” No gil changes hands.

Read the “Chocobos” tutorial that opens next. It confirms the unlock with “Congratulations! You have obtained a chocobo.” and explains the controls: “Press R while on the field map to summon it for swift travel. Should your destination ever feel far away, just call for your chocobo.”

How to summon and ride your chocobo

Once the scene finishes, the party is mounted on a chocobo in the field outside Kol. Your new objective is “Go to the town of Felicitas”, and its marker points to the green island south of you.

While you are mounted, the field controls in the left corner show R Dismount Chocobo above World Map (M), Mini-Map (Z) and Quests (J). Press R to get off, and press R on the field map again whenever you want the chocobo back.

Active Time Chat: Chocobo Comforts

Once you have the chocobo, riding through the desert south-west of Kol brings up a banner in the bottom-left corner showing “Chocobo Comforts” with “Q Play”, and a red circle marks the area on the mini-map while the chat is available.

Press Q to open the ACTIVE TIME CHAT list, where “Chocobo Comforts” sits at the bottom beneath a column of “???” slots for chats you have not found yet. Selecting it plays the chat as voiced banter on the field (Q skips it): Fina asks “What’s wrong, Lasswell?”, Lasswell admits “My rear end is killing me.” and “I just can’t get used to riding that chocobo.”, and when Fina offers to help he answers “I appreciate the sentiment, but I’ll respectfully decline.” After that first chat, the field controls list “Q Active Time Chat”.

The Kweh! achievement

As soon as you are back on the field with your chocobo, the achievement “Kweh!” (“Obtain a chocobo.”) pops up. The chocobo is part of the main story, so the achievement cannot be missed. Rain, Lasswell and Fina are the party at this point (see the playable characters).
