Grandshelt Royal Capital plaza west arm in Final Fantasy Resonance

Quick answer: Your first clear of Fledgling Battle 3 (recommended Lv. 29) in the Colosseum at Grandshelt, the Royal Capital, awards the Ancient Greatsword. The arena becomes available in Chapter 4 (Banner Oath), which is the earliest you can obtain it. Shops do not carry it; its stats are only 1 Phys. Atk and 1 Mag. Atk, and its purpose is the trial of the greatsword in the Chamber of Arms, which turns it into Ragnarok.

Where to get the Ancient Greatsword

The Colosseum is the only place the Ancient Greatsword comes from. It is the third of five rank battles in the Fledgling League, and winning Fledgling Battle 3 for the first time gives you Ancient Greatsword x1. For the rest of the arena’s leagues and rewards, see the Colosseum guide.

When you can get it

The Colosseum opens in Chapter 4, Banner Oath. During Chapters 1 to 3, a soldier at the end of the plaza’s west arm in Grandshelt, the Royal Capital turns you back with “The Colosseum is just ahead, but it is closed until the town recovers.” Where Chapter 4 falls in the story is in the chapter list.

Once Chapter 4 begins, head down the west arm of the plaza, the side opposite the Commercial District arm, and sign up with the Colosseum Receptionist inside. The Ancient Greatsword is a weapon for Rain, the party’s greatsword user.

The game’s own hint for the sword points the same way. It reads “Acquire the ancient greatsword whose gleam has long since faded.” and then “It will surely come along with the glory of victory in a place where the strong test their might.”

Those numbers are low for a reason. The game’s text for the sword reads “The ancient greatsword has forgotten its strength and lost its once magnificent gleam.” followed by “Should you desire its power, take up the trial of the greatsword.” It is one of all 12 Ancient pieces, and each one is restored by its own trial. The weapons list covers how it sits against everything else Rain can equip.

Do not sell the Ancient Greatsword for its 50 Gil, and do not judge it by its stats. The sword exists to be taken into its trial.

The trial of the greatsword

The Ancient Greatsword is restored in the Chamber of Arms, which Square Enix’s Steam page describes as “the Chamber of Arms with formidable foes sealed within legendary weapons”. Restoring it takes two trials, both at the greatsword’s altar there. Neither costs gil or materials: each trial uses up the sword you bring and hands back the stronger one.

The trial of the greatsword, step by step, in the game’s own words.

Step 1: the trial of the greatsword (Ancient Greatsword to Ragnarok)

With the Ancient Greatsword in your inventory, the altar says “Should you desire its power, take up the trial of the greatsword.” and asks “Will you take up the trial?” There is no level requirement. The fight is against Alpherg, a Lv. 50 boss with 200,000 HP that “Uses Reflect on both enemies and allies.”, “Attacks by reflecting magic.” and “Takes multiple actions.”

Win, and the Ancient Greatsword is used up. The game confirms the swap: the Ancient Greatsword “has regained its strength, transforming it into” Ragnarok.

Step 2: the ultimate trial (Ragnarok to Ragnarok+)

Return to the altar with Ragnarok and it says “O bearer of Ragnarok, its true strength shall be granted only unto those deemed worthy.” The second trial needs Rain at Lv. 70 or higher. If he is below that, the altar only answers “You must hone your abilities if you are to undergo the trial.”

At Lv. 70 or above, the line changes to “Should you desire its true strength, you must take up the ultimate trial of the greatsword.” This time Alpherg is Lv. 75 with 980,000 HP. Beat it and Ragnarok is used up and replaced by Ragnarok+, with “Well done. You have drawn out the true strength of Ragnarok.”

Ragnarok+202104“Increases stagger power and damage dealt by non-elemental attacks by 25%.” plus “Raises damage cap to 99999.”Ultimate trial (Rain Lv. 70+, Alpherg Lv. 75)

Ragnarok already tops the greatswords list, and Ragnarok+ raises both attack stats and lifts Rain’s damage cap to 99,999. The other 11 Ancient pieces go through the same two trials, each with its own boss and character; all of them are in the Chamber of Arms guide.
