Petrified is one of the higher-value mutations in Fisch, multiplying a fish’s sell price by 8x. It arrived in Version 2.0, and unlike event-locked mutations, it’s permanently available — you just need the right rod, the right water, or enough money to keep rerolling.
Quick answer: Fish at Skycrest with the Ancient Idol Rod, or pay 45 C$ per reroll at the Drowned Appraiser in Tidefall until a caught fish rolls Petrified. Without the rod, Skycrest still gives a 0.065% natural chance per catch.
What the Petrified mutation does to a fish
Petrified applies a flat 8x multiplier to the fish’s sell value and changes its appearance to a stony gray. It’s appraisable, which is what makes the reroll route viable at all, and its base chance through appraisal sits at roughly 0.065%.
The rule that matters most while grinding: a fish can only carry one mutation at a time. Attributes are separate and do stack, so a Big Sparkling Petrified catch is possible and sells for considerably more than the mutation alone. Size attributes like Big and Giant can be stripped away during appraisal if the fish loses enough weight, so a heavy fish you’re happy with is a risky reroll candidate.

The Ancient Idol Rod is the dedicated tool for this mutation, and it isn’t sold outright. Forgemaster Torin hands it over only after two conditions are met, and both are tied to Skycrest.
Fish for Petrified at Skycrest
Skycrest is the only place Petrified appears naturally, and the rate there is 0.065% per catch without any rod bonus. The Ancient Idol Rod raises that chance while you fish, so the two work together rather than as alternatives.

Tip: Don’t grind this with a rod that forces a different mutation at a high or guaranteed rate. Since a fish can hold only one mutation, a 100% rod effect leaves no room for Petrified to land.
Reroll a fish at the Drowned Appraiser in Tidefall
If you already have a fish worth keeping, the second route skips the rod grind entirely. The Drowned Appraiser in Tidefall rerolls a fish’s mutation at double the mutation chance of the standard Appraiser, and each attempt costs 45 C$ — a fraction of the 450 C$ the Moosewood Appraiser charges.

Which route to pick
| Route | Requirement | Cost per attempt |
|---|---|---|
| Ancient Idol Rod at Skycrest | 5 Giant fish at Skycrest, 7 Ancient Idol Charms | Free (time only) |
| Natural catch at Skycrest | Any rod, fish at Skycrest | Free (0.065% per catch) |
| Drowned Appraiser, Tidefall | A fish already in your inventory | 45 C$ |
| Appraiser, Moosewood | A fish already in your inventory | 450 C$ |
The rod route is the better long-term investment if you plan to farm Petrified repeatedly, since it costs nothing per cast once unlocked. The Tidefall route is faster to start and the sensible choice if you’re short on charms but flush with cash.
How to confirm the mutation applied
The mutation name is added directly to the fish’s label, so a rock becomes a Petrified Rock and shows the same prefix in your inventory and at the sell menu. The fish also takes on the mutation’s gray stone coloring, and its listed sell price jumps to eight times the base value.
If it isn’t landing, the cause is almost always one of three things. You’re fishing somewhere other than Skycrest, your rod is applying a competing mutation that occupies the single mutation slot, or you simply haven’t hit the odds yet — at 0.065% per catch, hundreds of casts without a Petrified is normal, not a sign something is broken.
