Gifting is the fastest lever you have on relationships in Fields of Mistria. Every villager keeps a private list of about ten items they love and roughly twenty they like, and hitting those lists is worth several times more than anything else you can hand over. With 1.0 raising hearts to ten and adding marriage, the difference between a good gift and a random one adds up over a season.
Quick answer: Give one Loved gift per villager per day for 20 friendship points, talk to them once for another 7, and hold a Loved item back for their birthday, when it pays 40.
Friendship points for every gift tier
Each item falls into one of five reactions, and the payout changes on a character’s birthday. The gap between Loved and Liked is the whole reason knowing the lists matters.

Two rules cap how fast you can climb. You can only hand over one gift per villager per day, so there is no way to brute-force a relationship in a single afternoon. Talking to someone once a day adds 7 points on top of the gift, and it costs nothing, so do both every time you pass them in town.
Tip: Because birthdays turn a 20-point gift into a 40-point one, the highest-value play is to bank a Loved item ahead of the date rather than spend it the day before.
Villagers you have to unlock before you can gift them
Two characters are gated behind story progress. Caldarus, the guardian dragon, cannot accept anything until you finish the Breaking the Fire Seal quest deep in the mines. After that he takes human form and settles into his temple in the Deep Woods, starting with a chunk of friendship already banked based on how far you are through the main story. He spent an age as a statue and is fascinated by food, so cooked dishes are the safe default with him.
Seridia takes considerably more work. You first meet her in the mines after the Water Tablet quest, where she drops a Heart Crystal and disappears. Unlocking her properly means reaching mine level 100 and breaking the final seal, which itself requires Juniper and Eiland at eight hearts each. Once freed, she moves into a home in the Western Ruins and can be gifted normally.
Several others are market-only. Darcy, Louis, Merri and Vera appear at the Saturday Market, and the 1.0 update added Stillwell and Zorel to that rotation, so plan your gifting around the day they show up.
Loved and liked gifts for every character
Loved items are worth double a Liked one, but they are usually rarer, harder to cook, or locked behind deep mine floors. Liked items are the realistic daily choice for most characters, and consistency beats hoarding. Perfect gems, Golden animal products and high-tier cooked dishes carry most of the Loved lists.

A few patterns make daily gifting easier. Anyone who works with animals or crafting materials (Louis, Merri, Landen, Ryis) loves Golden animal products, so an upgraded barn or coop feeds several relationships at once. March and Olric run on ore, which means a normal mining run stocks both. Celine wants flowers, Terithia wants fish dishes, and Darcy wants raw fruit and dairy, all of which you already produce on the farm.
Disliked and hated gifts to keep out of your bag
Two categories are near-universal rejections. Junk covers acorns, sap, cattail fluff, sod and similar low-value forage. Weird Gifts are functional items that make no sense as presents, like Dog Treats, Cat Treats and the feed used for breeding animals. Bugs are the third common offender, though a handful of characters actively want them.
A separate rule applies to the town’s kids and animals. Dell, Dozy, Henrietta, Luc and Maple refuse alcohol and caffeine outright, and Dozy and Henrietta also refuse chocolate. Each character also has exactly one Hated item, which is worth remembering because handing it over is a wasted day.

Note the two dragon-related traps. Caldarus hates the Unknown Dragon Statuette and Seridia hates the Statuette of Caldarus, and each dislikes dragon parts in general, so never hand either of them a Dragon Scale or Dragon Claw.
Birthdays worth saving a Loved gift for
Birthdays are the only day a single gift is worth 40 points, so mark these on your calendar and keep the right item in storage. Even a Disliked or Hated item still pays 20 on the day, which is useful to know if you get caught short, but a Loved gift doubles that.

How to confirm your gifts are working
The reaction is immediate. A Loved or Liked item produces a visibly positive response in the dialogue box, and the character’s profile page slowly fills in their liked and loved items as you discover them, so the sheet builds itself as you play. Your heart level with each villager is tracked in the journal.
Progress also announces itself through the mail. A heart event unlocks every two hearts, arriving as a letter that invites you to meet the character somewhere specific, and that letter is your proof the points landed. In 1.0, hearts run to ten, which is the threshold for a proposal.
If a relationship stalls, the cause is usually one of three things. You already gave that villager something earlier the same day, the item fell into Junk or Weird Gifts, or you handed a Loved item to the wrong person because two characters share similar-looking favorites. Villagers also drop hints in conversation, and Elsie’s gossip can reveal a preference when you are stuck on someone.
The efficient loop is simple enough to run on autopilot. Cook a batch of whatever dish covers the most people on your list, mine for Perfect ores when you need something for March, Olric or Balor, and spend the last part of each day talking to whoever you passed without saying hello.
